Idaho murders: New book on Kohberger reveals previously unseen evidence, claims sheath could be inadmissible

EXCLUSIVE: A new book reveals what Bryan Kohberger’s trial defense would have looked like had he not changed his plea in the Idaho student murders weeks ahead of trial and reveals the defense could have argued for the most critical evidence in the case — a Ka-Bar knife sheath — to be tossed.

Christopher Whitcomb’s « Broken Plea: The Explosive Search for Truth Behind the Idaho Murders, » draws on previously unseen expert reports and other materials that were never presented publicly in court after Kohberger pleaded guilty weeks before his trial date.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Whitcomb revealed that a defense expert raised serious chain of custody concerns surrounding the sheath found in victim Madison Mogen’s bed.

EMAILS REVEAL HOW CAMPUS POLICE TRACKED DOWN BRYAN KOHBERGER’S CAR WEEKS BEFORE HE BECAME A SUSPECT

« It is plausible for someone to argue that the chain of custody would have led to significant problems for the prosecution in presenting evidence of any kind of DNA, and if that were to be excluded, then you have a white car and you have the cell tower pings, » he said. « I would say, fundamentally, looking at this case fundamentally, that problem is the biggest problem the prosecution would have had.«

Brent Turvey, a criminologist and forensic scientist hired by the defense, said he became aware of the chain of custody issue after filing his expert report to meet a court deadline.

IDAHO MURDER VICTIMS’ FAMILIES OUTRAGED AFTER CRIME SCENE PHOTOS ACCIDENTALLY RELEASED

« If this had gone to trial, this piece of evidence should have, by any competent jurist, been ruled inadmissible, » he said of the sheath. « In most cases, in most jurisdictions, it would be. »

No judge or jury has evaluated that claim.

« The problem is a chain of custody form is supposed to be something that is created live, » Turvey said Wednesday. « So, if I take a bag of evidence and I retrieve it, I sign that I’ve retrieved it, put my signature on it, the date, you know, that kind of stuff. »

The evidence bag appears to have been filled in twice. Once on the bag itself, and later on a sticker attached to the front.

The earliest date visible on the bag are the initials « BP, » likely belonging to lead detective Brett Payne, and the date « 11/14/22, » written over the evidence tape sealing the bag. Another signature appears to be from Shannon Arredondo, a forensic specialist with the Idaho State Police crime lab, signed and dated the bag again on Nov. 16. The label, affixed sometime later, has six recorded exchanges between Nov. 13 and Nov. 16 written by a single pen in similar handwriting, according to Turvey.

Kohberger’s defense team, led by Idaho attorney Anne Taylor, did not pursue his findings before the plea deal, however, Whitcomb said. She did not respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment.

If the paper trail is flawed as alleged, that doesn’t necessarily mean investigators botched the case, said Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector and Fox News contributor.

« But what it could point to is that is a vulnerability in the case, so they take a plea, » he said. « They could have been concerned about losing a juror on that. On the other hand it’s very indicative of what you do when you have absolutely no defense, you put the procedure on trial, instead of the facts. »

Mauro, after reviewing images of the evidence bag, said he didn’t see a significant problem for the prosecution.

That’s just one element of Kohberger’s defense that never faced jury scrutiny, and Whitcomb said he reviewed thousands of pages of additional documents that he didn’t have room to write about.

A second key element in « Broken Plea » is speculation surrounding wisps of hair photographed at the crime scene in, or at least beneath, Ethan Chapin’s hand.

« To the best of my knowledge, that hair to this day has never been processed or tested, » Whitcomb told Fox News Digital.

Turvey, a senior partner at Forensic Solutions LLC who has testified at more than 70 trials, found the hair when he traveled to Moscow, Idaho, to review evidence in person.

BRYAN KOHBERGER CASE: SURVIVING ROOMMATE SAW XANA KERNODLE ON FLOOR AFTER ENCOUNTER WITH MASKED INTRUDER

« The FBI lab said Kohberger is excluded, » Turvey told Fox News Digital. « This is not his hair. »

As to who it belongs to, the answer remains unclear.

« When I saw this information, it changed my perspective on everything, and that’s how it started, » Whitcomb said, describing his motivation to write the book.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Idaho State Police and the Moscow Police Department for comment.

The author is a former member of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team and early member of the bureau’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program. He plays in a band, spent years as a journalist and congressional speechwriter, and has written a half-dozen other books.

« I don’t feel it’s my place to challenge what [Kohberger] told the world, » he said in an interview Tuesday. « I’m not saying this is a wrongful conviction. He pleaded guilty. He’s a well-educated, intelligent, grown man. »

Jurors never had a chance to weigh in after Kohberger’s unexpected guilty plea last year, when he admitted to the Nov. 13, 2022, murders of Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Chapin, 20.

BRYAN KOHBERGER’S PROFESSOR CALLED OUT HIS ‘ASSUMPTION’ ABOUT LOCAL COPS BEFORE IDAHO STUDENT MURDERS

The plea landed him in prison for the rest of his life, with no chance of parole, but he avoided the death penalty. He offered no explanation for the crimes, shared no motive and offered no new information.

Prosecutors have said Kohberger remained inside for about 15 minutes, although the initial police affidavit doesn’t describe the exact time he went into the house. Whitcomb notes the defense narrative that the attacks took place in less than five, inconsistent with the hours Turvey suspects the crime scene cleanup would have taken.

While there were many outside experts on the case, Whitcomb focuses on three, T. Paulette Sutton, a forensic scientist specializing in blood spatter analysis for the prosecution; Turvey, for the defense; and Christopher Holland, a retired FBI agent and forensic criminologist also working for the defense.

Sutton, who did not respond to a request for comment, concluded in her peer-reviewed report that there was « no physical evidence to exclude a single perpetrator causing the death of these four individuals. » Turvey believes there were at least two.

Both of their reports have been reviewed by Fox News Digital. They contain graphic crime scene images not suitable for publication.

FOLLOW THE FOX TRUE CRIME TEAM ON X

Whitcomb also obtained access to materials not mentioned in the book, which he told Fox News Digital include images of the evidence bag containing the Ka-Bar sheath, one with a chain of custody form attached and one without.

Whitcomb raised a number of issues that Taylor and the rest of Kohberger’s defense team never got a chance to present to a jury.

Kohberger pleaded guilty on July 2, 2025, admitting to all four murders and felony burglary in a deal that spared him from the potential death penalty.

On the night of the murders, he searched Google for local police dispatch audio, according to public records tied to the case. He powered off his phone before the murders and turned it back on after them. While investigators found none of the victim’s DNA in his car after they seized it in Pennsylvania, an FBI analyst determined soil on a shovel found inside it matched dirt from the Moscow area.

At sentencing, he sat through victim impact statements showing no emotion, as the victims’ families and surviving roommates excoriated him in their impact statements.

« Truth be told, I’m unable to come up with anything redeeming about Mr. Kohberger, » Judge Steven Hippler said at the hearing. « His grotesque acts of evil have buried and hidden anything that might have been good or intrinsically human about him. »

LISTEN TO THE NEW ‘CRIME & JUSTICE WITH DONNA ROTUNNO’ PODCAST

Hippler handed down a sentence of four consecutive terms of life in prison with no parole, plus another 10 years.

As part of the plea, Kohberger forfeited his right to appeal.

The case’s lead detectives, Idaho State Police Lt. Darren Gilbertson and Moscow Police Cpl. Brett Payne, said afterward they still didn’t know his motive.

« Why did he take the plea? » Turvey asked in a conversation Wednesday. « I don’t know. I never met him. »

By design, he does not meet with defendants whose cases he’s working on, he said. But he is aware the defense made arguments about Kohberger’s mental health and capacity.

« He was not in a good space to make those kinds of decisions, and that was their argument the whole time, » he said. « So the idea that you would go in and get him to take a plea when he doesn’t know everything, doesn’t understand it… Well that’s a problem. »

« Broken Plea » is in stores on April 28.

  • Natural hormone may reduce obesity without cutting calories, scientists say

Natural hormone may reduce obesity without cutting calories, scientists say

Researchers at the University of Oklahoma have discovered a hormone that appears to reverse obesity in the body.

The new study, published in the journal Cell Reports, used mouse models to identify a naturally occurring hormone called FGF21 (fibroblast growth factor 21).

The hormone « appears to work by signaling to a brain region involved in metabolism and appetite regulation, the same area targeted by the popular GLP-1 drugs, » according to a university press release.

PEPTIDES MAY SOON BE EASIER TO GET AMID RFK JR.’S PUSH, BUT EXPERTS WARN OF RISKS

FGF21 is reportedly already involved in the development of a drug to treat metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), which is a form of fatty liver disease.

Lead study author Matthew Potthoff, PhD, a professor of biochemistry and physiology at OU College of Medicine and deputy director of the OU Health Harold Hamm Diabetes Center, said the study showed how the hormone sends « signals » to the lower back region of the brain.

« In our previous studies, we found that FGF21 signals to the brain instead of the liver, but we didn’t know where in the brain, » he wrote.

« We thought we would find that it signaled to the hypothalamus (which is widely implicated in body weight regulation), so we were very surprised to discover that the signal was to the hindbrain, which is where the GLP-1 analogs are believed to act. »

The brain circuit behind these metabolic benefits appears to work by « mediating the effects of FGF21, » Potthoff said — a process that can also be linked to side effects like gastrointestinal issues and, in some cases, bone loss.

« We hope that by identifying the specific circuit, it can help in the creation of more targeted therapies that are effective without negative side effects, » he added.

The FGF21 and GLP-1 hormones act differently, although they target the same area of the brain, according to the researchers. While GLP-1 reduces food intake via appetite, FGF21 increases metabolic rate, burning energy and triggering weight loss.

Potthoff shared his hope for a new FGF21 drug that could target both weight loss and MASH, noting that additional studies are necessary to explore this potential.

TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ

Dr. Peter Balazs MD, a hormone and weight loss specialist practicing in New York and New Jersey, said this discovery raises the possibility of targeting metabolic rate « directly, » rather than relying only on calorie restriction.

« However, this is a preclinical [mouse] study using diet-induced obesity models, which is not fully relevant or similar to human obesity’s chronic metabolic adaptations, » he told Fox News Digital.

FGF21 behaves differently in humans than in mice, as obese people have higher levels of the hormone in their blood, according to Balazs. This raises the question of how effective FGF21-based treatments would be.

« There are also important clinical concerns, such as whether FGF21 analogs can cause side effects like digestive issues and bone loss, which is especially risky since obesity already increases the chance of fractures, » he cautioned. « The study doesn’t explain how these issues might be managed. »

CLICK HERE FOR MORE HEALTH STORIES

Early human trials of FGF21 showed « modest weight loss » between 5% and 8%, according to Balazs, which is « less impressive » compared to GLP-1 treatments’ average 15% weight loss.

It is also unclear whether the body could develop tolerance to FGF21 over time, which could reduce its effectiveness with long-term use, he added.

« The study is a nice first step toward alternative biochemical pathways for treating obesity, » Balazs added. « However, clinical adoption will require safety trials that include bone density monitoring, along with confirmatory data in humans. »

  • NYC mayor touts ‘socialist’ wins in first 100 days alongside Bernie Sanders

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked his first 100 days in office Sunday alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist, touting what he described as sweeping achievements driven by government intervention.

Mamdani cited key wins, including securing $1.2 billion for universal child care, advancing plans for five publicly owned grocery stores, pursuing legal action against landlords, and boosting investment in services such as sanitation and infrastructure.

In a reference to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her critique that socialists « eventually run out of other people’s money, » Mamdani defended his administration’s approach.

« I have thought often of the Margaret Thatcher’s quote, the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money, » he said. « If anything, my friends, it seems that you eventually need a socialist to clean up the mess, »

Sanders also praised the mayor’s agenda, calling it an inspiration for strengthening communities.

« This is the first time I was ever introduced by someone who talked proudly about democratic socialism, » Sanders said. « And it feels great. »

Mamdani highlighted additional policy priorities during his first three months in office.

To address rising food costs, he proposed opening five publicly owned, affordable grocery stores — one in each borough — by the end of his first term, a proposal critics say represents a departure from free-market principles. Critics say the plan departs from free-market principles. He added that the first location is expected to open next year.

MAMDANI CLARIFIES NYC WON’T CHECK IMMIGRATION STATUS FOR UNIVERSAL CHILDCARE ENROLLEES

The mayor also pointed to universal  child care as a major early win, though critics say the program relies on heavy taxation and could disrupt existing private daycare providers. Mamdani noted the initiative was fulfilled by his eighth day in office through a $1.2 billion partnership with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The administration has intensified enforcement in the housing sector, with Mamdani saying it issued more than 195,000 violations against landlords and secured more than $34 million in settlements, judgments , and repairs for tenants.

With murders at record lows, officials said the city has removed more than 1,000 guns from the streets and established its first Office of Community Safety to address gun violence and mental health.

In addition, city workers also have filled more than 102,000 potholes in 100 days and are on track to repave more than 1,000 lane miles of streets by the end of the fiscal year.

  • Trump voices frustration with NATO, says Iranian navy ‘destroyed’ as US preps for blockade

President Donald Trump addressed several pressing international conflicts after stepping off Air Force One in Maryland on Sunday, declaring that Iranian naval forces had been destroyed ahead of a planned energy blockade and expressing sharp disapproval of NATO for its perceived lack of support.

« Their military is destroyed, » Trump said. « Their whole Navy is underwater. You know that 158 ships are gone. Their navy is gone. Most of their mine droppers are gone. »

« At 10 tomorrow, we have a blockade going into effect, » Trump added. « Other nations are working so that Iran will not be able to sell oil. »

Trump further underscored the United States’ energy independence, asserting that international vessels are bypassing traditional routes in favor of purchasing American oil.

« There are many boats heading toward our country to fill up with oil and then go and take it, » he said.

The president then expressed sharp disapproval of NATO countries, indicating that America’s financial commitment to support the alliance is going to be under « very serious » examination.

« But I’m very disappointed in NATO, » he said. « They weren’t there for us. We pay trillions of dollars for NATO, and they weren’t there for us. »

While NATO countries are now stepping up to assist the U.S., Trump described the effort as too late.

« Now they want to come up, but there’s no real threat anymore, » he said.

  • Two Democratic reps call for Swalwell to exit Congress as controversy swirls around his bid for CA governor

Two high-profile Democrats on Sunday called for Rep. Eric Swalwell to exit Congress as controversy continues to grow after sexual assault allegations surfaced against the California candidate for governor.

Eugene Vindman said Sunday on CNN’s « State of the Union » that Swalwell should resign from Congress and drop out of California’s gubernatorial race.

« The accusations are absolutely heinous, and his admissions betraying his family are deplorable, » Vindman said to host Dana Bash. « So Eric Swalwell needs to resign. He needs to drop out of the race… we should not tolerate this behavior, and Representative Swalwell needs to go. »

Vindman made the remarks during a panel discussion on the broadcast, as CNN political commentators, Davis Urban, Kristen Soltis Anderson and Jamal Simmons debated how party leadership should respond to the allegations and whether Swalwell should remain in Congress while facing scrutiny.

Bash pressed Vindman on whether his call extended beyond the campaign trail to Swalwell’s congressional seat.

SWALWELL CAMPAIGN SETS OFF ALARM BELLS AFTER ACCEPTING $25K DONATION FROM CCP-TIED LAWYER: ‘OUTRAGEOUS’

    « Yes, » Vindman said.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., echoed similar concerns during a Sunday appearance on « Meet the Press, » framing the allegations as part of a broader pattern and calling for accountability.

« I’ve already called for Congressman Swalwell to drop out of the gubernatorial race, and I think we have to hold everybody accountable, » Jayapal said.

When asked whether she would support Swalwell’s expulsion from Congress, Jayapal indicated support.

    « I would, » she said.

Back on CNN, Simmons, a former advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris, said Democrats should weigh accountability alongside due process, outlining potential actions short of resignation.

« The question is, should someone be punished for something they haven’t been convicted of, » Simmons said.

« But you can take him off of committees, make sure that he’s not running, and take away any funding that you were giving. The congressman has to decide whether he needs to be focused on his family, his reputation and his legal case. »

Republican strategist Kristen Soltis Anderson said the political environment has changed how parties respond to such allegations.

« Not too long ago in our politics, this would have been instantaneous, career-ending. You’re gone, » Anderson said. « It’s precisely because we live in these narrowly divided times that leadership does not want to lose a vote in a House that is as tight as it is. »

SWALWELL CAMPAIGN REJECTS ‘OUTRAGEOUS’ ALLEGATIONS OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AS DEM ACTIVISTS ISSUE VIRAL WARNING

Simmons added that Democrats still need to clearly signal their position.

« The Democrats have to be strong and let everybody know where they stand on this, that it’s unacceptable, » he said.

CNN senior political commentator David Urban said a potential House vote, being led by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, could force Congress to publicly take a stance.

« Everyone’s going to be on record whether you support it or not, » Urban said. « Do you tolerate this kind of behavior? Should this be acceptable kind of behavior? The answer should be no. »

  • Sergio Garcia destroys his driver in frustration at the Masters, receives code of conduct warning

Augusta gets the past of green jacket winners, too.

2017 winner Sergio Garcia shattered his driver after taking his anger out on the second tee box of the legendary golf course.

Paired with fellow Spaniard and 2023 winner Jon Rahm, Garcia slammed his club into the turf twice after hitting a shot that ended up in the bunker. Then he took a swipe at a table with a green cooler on it.

That left the head of his driver dangling from the shaft, and he reached over and yanked it off completely. Garcia eventually received a code of conduct warning.

Garcia entered the day well out of contention and then bogeyed the first hole, so his anger is understandable.

RORY MCILROY’S MONSTROUS LEAD DISAPPEARS, SURPRISE CONTENDER SURGES AS MASTERS COMES DOWN TO FINAL DAY

Later on that second hole, things turned comical when Garcia started carrying Rahm’s bag while Rahm’s caddie was tending to the bunker. The crowd applauded when Rahm took the bag from Garcia and started carrying it himself as caddie Adam Hayes hustled to catch up to the players.

Garcia was disqualified in 2019 at the Saudi International for damaging greens in frustration. This time he got control of himself before it got to that point, although he eventually received the warning.

According to club officials, Geoff Yang in his role as chairman of the competitions committee spoke to Garcia on the fourth tee and issued the code of conduct warning.

  • NASA chief declares America ‘absolutely back’ in space race, says US will beat China to the moon

A top NASA official declared America is « absolutely back » in the space race, as the U.S. races to beat China to the moon under an aggressive Trump push to build a lunar base and eventually plant Old Glory on Mars.

« We are absolutely on an achievable path now, » NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said Saturday.

« There is no question… President Trump gave us the Artemis program that’s currently underway right now during his first term… he gave us the resources to actually execute on an achievable plan through the Working Family Tax Cut Act and the mandate not just to go back to the moon with the national space policy, but to go back, to stay, to build the moon base, » he added.

Isaacman told « Saturday in America » host Kayleigh McEnany that the president has repeatedly told him that NASA should « figure out what we need to do to go to Mars. »

« That’s exactly why you build the moon base to master the skills that we can send American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on Mars someday, » he added.

Isaacman said the U.S. is now on a clear trajectory to return astronauts to the lunar surface and stay there.

« We are getting underway building the moon base essentially right now, » he said, noting that Americans will be able to follow along as early as 2027, when NASA begins a near-monthly cadence of robotic missions to the moon’s South Pole.

Those missions will lay the groundwork for a sustained American presence beyond Earth, as NASA also builds toward its long-term goal of sending astronauts to Mars.

« [We’re going to be] test[ing] out mobility, crewed mobility, uncrewed mobility, power, navigation and the In-Situ resource manufacturing, which is going be paramount for future missions to Mars. »

  • Boatyard employee found ‘exhausted’ missing American’s husband when he washed ashore after night adrift

EXCLUSIVE: An overnight security guard at a boatyard on a Bahamian island encountered American man Brian Hooker when he washed ashore about eight hours after his wife disappeared into a dark and stormy sea last weekend.

Edward Smith works at Marsh Harbour Boatyards, a boat storage and repair facility in the tourist destination, and was alerted by another employee that a man had stumbled onto the property talking about a key and a woman.

That man was Hooker, 58, who is currently being held in a Freeport, Bahamas jail, after he said his wife, Lynette Hooker, fell off their dinghy while motoring back to their yacht from a bar in Hope Town.

DAUGHTER OF MISSING AMERICAN WOMAN IN BAHAMAS SAYS THERE WERE ‘PRIOR ISSUES,’ CALLS FOR FULL INVESTIGATION

On Saturday, April 4, Hooker and his wife had been dining and drinking at the Abaco Inn – a restaurant in Hope Town, known to locals as « Elbow Cay » – several miles by sea from the small beach covered by jagged rocks where he landed in Marsh Harbour.

« He said he was on a cay, like at a bar, having something to eat or drink, and they came out to go to another place or back to their boat, but somehow they got out in the rough weather, and they had that incident, the lady [went] overboard, or whatever, » Smith told Fox News Digital on Saturday.

Smith declined to be video recorded or photographed.

Hooker was arrested for questioning while police investigate Lynette’s disappearance. He told police that seas were rough just after sundown when the pair attempted to return to their yacht, and that Lynette fell overboard with the dinghy’s key in her pocket, cutting off the engine. Hooker drifted and paddled on the dinghy for the next several hours, eventually arriving on the boatyard’s shore around 4 a.m. the next day.

« He drifted from that time until the time he hit here, » said Smith.

HUSBAND OF AMERICAN WOMAN MISSING IN THE BAHAMAS SPEAKS OUT FOR FIRST TIME, SAYS HE IS ‘HEARTBROKEN’

Police have not charged Hooker with a crime, and he maintains that Lynette fell overboard by accident. He was arrested and transported to Freeport, a separate Bahamian island, on Wednesday.  Bahamian law calls for a 48-hour limit to hold someone without charging them with a crime.

Under special circumstances, that time can be extended. In this case, it was, as Hooker’s attorney, Terrel Butler, said Friday night that officials decided to keep Hooker in custody for up to another 72 hours. The deadline for his release is now Monday night at around 7:30 p.m., but he could be released at any time if authorities decide not to charge him.

He is being questioned in relation to the Bahamian crime « causing harm resulting in death. »

Smith said Hooker did not appear suspicious when the pair met.

« He was more exhausted than anything else, » said Smith. « He was asking for water. He wanted water to drink. »

« I asked him, ‘so where is the lady?’ » Smith recalled. « He says, ‘she’s in the water.’ »

Smith said he asked Hooker what time Lynette fell in the water, to which he replied 7 p.m., which shocked him.

MISSING AMERICAN WOMAN’S HUSBAND HAD ‘SPOTTY’ CELL SERVICE DURING 8-HOUR TREK TO REPORT DISAPPEARANCE: TELECOM BOSS

« So I say, ‘from seven? And you’re just reaching [the shore] now?’ » Smith said. « He said the wind was blowing so strong, so when that happened, the boat blew away from him and he couldn’t really see in the dark. »

According to Smith, Bryan told him that when he last saw Lynette, she was swimming back toward Hope Town with a yellow bag on her person. He said Hooker was wearing a yellow bag when he washed ashore, too.

Hooker told Smith he tried to signal for help from the small vessel.

« He said he sent up two flares, » said Smith. « The first flare he sent up, there was a boat that passed and they didn’t respond to it. He said another boat passed, he sent up another flare, and they didn’t respond to it. »

Smith called the police to assist Hooker. He said the police arrived at about 5 a.m., and Hooker was still talking to them when Smith’s shift ended at 7 a.m.

Bahamian authorities have been tight-lipped about the process, but the investigation into Lynette’s disappearance remains ongoing.

A second employee of the boatyard told Fox News Digital that police returned there Saturday, but did not elaborate on their activities.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told Fox News Digital on Saturday that authorities are searching for Lynette’s body near Hope Town.

  • Christmas Vacation and Congress: ‘We’re all in misery’ amid the ongoing DHS shutdown

If you thought the Congressional appropriations process couldn’t get any worse, I present you with 2026. And perhaps beyond.

The Department of Homeland Security remains shut down, running on pocket lint, nickels lost between the couch cushions and faded S&H Green Stamps (look ‘em up, kids). Congress hasn’t funded DHS for two months. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., torqued himself into a political pretzel – opposing, then supporting, then not acting on – a Senate-approved package to fund most of DHS.

As we always say, it’s about the math, and when it comes to DHS money, it appears that lawmakers have locked a box to which they lack the combination. There is apparently no sequence of votes in the House and Senate which can crack the DHS safe as a traditional, standalone appropriations bill.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: WHY TRUMP MAY NOT BE ABLE TO FORCE CONGRESS BACK OVER THE DHS SHUTDOWN

Now, Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump are turning to one of the few methods which might work to fund DHS – something called budget reconciliation.

The Congressional budget reconciliation process is not customarily used for appropriations bills – although lawmakers can plug the measure with money to spend on federal programs. However, reconciliation is inoculated from filibusters. Thus, Republicans don’t need 60 votes. They can – ostensibly – pass a DHS bill on its own without help from Democrats if they hold their narrow coalitions together in both the House and Senate.

Congressional Republicans intend to stuff this reconciliation package with only money for ICE and Customs and Border Patrol. Nothing for disaster aid. Nothing for farmers. Nothing about the SAVE America Act. The president agrees. The goal is to finish this by June 1 – months after the latest DHS funding lapse.

But it’s more complicated than that.

GOP INFIGHTING REPLACES CLASH WITH DEMS, DERAILS PATH TO END HISTORIC DHS SHUTDOWN

The House and Senate must take a number of steps to approve a shell of a budget resolution in order to have the filibuster-proof reconciliation tool available to them. Republicans undertook a similar endeavor last winter and spring. It was absolutely harrowing and consumed months before finally approving the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, via reconciliation. Republicans don’t have that kind of time now. Then again, DHS has either been unfunded or held together by interim spending bills since last October.

We haven’t even mentioned how Trump is using a somewhat dubious authority to pay TSA workers and others from other funds – without Congressional approval.

That leaves some to question why the administration didn’t do this to start with. But the bigger issue is an alarming pattern of Congress ceding its most precious prerogative – the power of the purse – to the executive branch. That’s to say nothing as to whether Trump’s gambit to pay workers is even Constitutional. And, it establishes a precedent which may be hard to ignore during other funding impasses.

However, here’s the bigger problem: the Congressional paralysis to pass appropriations bills on a timely basis. That’s been an issue for years now.

Historically, Congress has missed the Oct. 1 fiscal deadline, relying on « Continuing Resolutions » (CR’s) which simply renew all funding on a temporary basis. Or, lawmakers cobble together a set of the 12 annual spending bills in a « minibus » appropriations package. Lawmakers who might oppose an individual bill are willing to support a group of bills – because there’s something in there which they like or support.

But turning to reconciliation as a way out of the appropriations box canyon is also another precedent which likely agitates Congressional appropriators. Sure. They’ve done that before. And in this instance, it might finally get DHS funded. But what does this mean for the future?

Which brings us to Oct. 1, 2026. That’s when the federal government pivots from Fiscal Year 2026 to start Fiscal Year 2027.

Congress has struggled to fund the federal government since early 2025, when it began work on appropriations bills for this year. The FY ’26 funding crisis – which spawned the record-breaking, 43-day, government-wide shutdown in the fall, another partial government shutdown last winter and the current DHS stalemate – has been an issue since lawmakers were working on bills for this cycle around this time LAST spring. So how pray tell is Congress going to avoid a shutdown THIS autumn for FY ’27?

In fact, few are even speaking about that possible peril – because no one can wrap their heads around the present appropriations saga. And it’s possible that this fall’s problems could be worse than last fall’s impasse. The reason? The midterm elections hit in November. It’s doubtful that either side will be willing to make much of a deal right before voters head to the polls.

The scenarios are frightening to fathom, so people are just kind of ignoring them.

SEE IT: LAWMAKERS CAUGHT ON VACATION AMID RECORD-BREAKING SHUTDOWN WHILE DHS WORKERS GO UNPAID

We have entered a new period of semi-perpetual funding standoffs – exacerbated by mistrust between the sides, narrow Congressional margins in both the House and Senate, parliamentary mathematical equations which don’t balance and an unwillingness by Trump to broker deals or even negotiate with Democrats.

Yes. They have options to cover DHS into next year, but it’s the other 11 spending bills which could be problematic.

Imagine trying to pass a defense spending bill which has a price tag 44% higher than the one last year? Or tacks a bunch of money on for the war in Iran?

Where’s the vote combination to approve a CR, let alone an individual bill? Will Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., be willing to help Republicans hit the 60 vote threshold to fund things? Especially if he sees the possibility of emerging again as Majority Leader? Probably not.

And let’s say Democrats win the House, Senate or both in the fall? Do you really think these spending standoffs get better over the final two years of Trump’s term?

Back to Chevy Chase and Clark Griswold. There’s a second part to that iconic quotation from Christmas Vacation: « We’re at the threshold of hell! » he declares.

Pretty funny, but not if you’re trying to keep the government open after the adventures of the past year. This is not hilarious to millions of federal workers who suffer from paycheck PTSD. Another round of spending mayhem could only erode further trust between federal workers and their employers. It will damage morale – which is already subterranean. That’s to say nothing of courting people to work for the government.

Yes. Things can get a lot worse. The political schisms are deep and the vote matrices to pass the bills simply don’t exist.

It may be spring, but the Christmas Vacation movie provides insight into where we stand with the Congressional appropriations bills: « It’s Christmas and we’re all in misery, » declares Ellen Griswold, played by Beverly D’Angelo.

Yeah. And wait to see what Congress has in store for THIS Christmas.

  • Eric Swalwell accused of paying nanny with campaign funds while she lacked work authorization

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., is facing allegations he violated immigration and employment laws to keep a live-in nanny in the U.S., including claims he paid her with campaign funds while she lacked work authorization, according to two recently filed complaints.

A complaint filed Tuesday with the Department of Labor alleges that Swalwell and his wife, Brittany Swalwell, lied to keep their babysitter, Amanda Barbosa, employed, according to The New York Post.

In a separate complaint filed in February with the Department of Homeland Security by California filmmaker and political activist Joel Gilbert, first reported by The Post, Swalwell is accused of paying his nanny with campaign funds for roughly two years while she allegedly did not have valid work authorization.

« Barbosa appears in numerous social media photos with the Swalwell family throughout 2023 and 2024, indicating continued close association and ongoing childcare responsibilities despite the absence of known lawful work authorization, » the DHS complaint states.

Barbosa was first hired by Swalwell — who is running for California governor — in 2021 after coming to the U.S. from Brazil on an au pair visa, according to The Post.

Barbosa was paid $3,914 in campaign funds in 2021 and received $46,930 in 2022, according to Federal Election Commission data.

According to a labor certification application reviewed by The Post, Swalwell began the process of sponsoring Barbosa for a green card in December 2022 as her visa was set to expire.

Barbosa later enrolled at a community college and was not allowed to work off campus under student visa rules, The Post reported. However, social media photos appear to show her interacting with Swalwell’s children at family events throughout 2023 and 2024.

FEC records reviewed by the outlet show that $52,262 in campaign expenses for « childcare » were reimbursed to Swalwell, which the complaint alleges was a workaround to keep Barbosa employed while she was not authorized to work in the U.S.

The Department of Labor told The Post the labor certification was approved in 2024. In 2025, Barbosa received $38,905 in campaign funds from Swalwell, according to FEC data.

Swalwell has denied the allegations and faced calls to drop his gubernatorial bid.

« They are absolutely false. They did not happen. They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything that I have. »

  • Vance says US-Iran talks end without deal after 21 hours of negotiations

Vice President JD Vance said Sunday that high-stakes talks between the U.S. and Iran ended without a deal after Iranian officials refused to accept American terms.

Speaking during a press conference from the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan, Vance said Iran has « chosen not to accept our terms. »

« The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, » Vance said. « And I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America. »

The vice president said talks with Iranian officials lasted 21 hours, describing them as « substantive discussions, » but adding the U.S. was unwilling to compromise on its « red lines. »

VANCE WARNS IRAN WILL ‘FIND OUT’ TRUMP IS ‘NOT ONE TO MESS AROUND’ IF CEASEFIRE DEAL FALLS APART

« So we go back to the United States, having not come to an agreement. We’ve made very clear what our red lines are, what things we’re willing to accommodate them on and what things we’re not willing to accommodate them on, » Vance added. « And we’ve made that as clear as we possibly could, and they have chosen not to accept our terms. »

Fox News Digital’s Preston Mizell asked Vance if he had been in contact with President Donald Trump during the talks, and the vice president said he had been « consistently. »

« I don’t know how many times we talked to him — a half dozen times, a dozen times over the past 21 hours, » Vance said, adding that the U.S. team was also communicating with other members of the Trump administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

GEN JACK KEANE ‘SKEPTICAL’ THAT IRAN CEASEFIRE WILL HOLD, WARNS TEHRAN WILL ‘DELAY AND OBFUSCATE’

« So, look, we were constantly in communication with the team because we were negotiating in good faith, » Vance said. « And we leave here with a very simple proposal, a method of understanding that is our final and best offer. We’ll see if the Iranians accept it. »

Vance arrived in Pakistan early Saturday to lead high-stakes negotiations with Iran aimed at preserving a fragile ceasefire announced by Trump earlier this week and preventing a broader regional war.

Vance was joined by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, as part of a senior delegation engaging Iranian officials in Islamabad.

TRUMP AGREES TO 2-WEEK CEASEFIRE IF IRAN OPENS STRAIT OF HORMUZ

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf were negotiating for Iran.

While Vance declined to elaborate on which terms Iran rejected, he said the U.S. sought assurances that Iran would not develop a nuclear weapon.

« The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon, » Vance said. « That is the core goal of the president of the United States. And that’s what we’ve tried to achieve through these negotiations. »

The talks came over a month after the U.S. launched Operation Epic Fury on Feb. 28.

Fox News Digital’s Preston Mizell and Morgan Phillips contributed to this report.

  • ‘The Boys’ creator admits ‘sinking feeling’ as reality ‘out-crazies’ his political final season

Amazon Prime Video’s series « The Boys » returned for its fifth and final season, and showrunner Eric Kripke noted in an interview the superhero show is heavily inspired by real life.

He said it’s a « sinking feeling » to watch real-world events that go beyond his show’s satire.

« It’s not a great feeling. It’s a sinking feeling. It’s never great when the world out-crazies your superhero show with exploding penises, » Kripke told The Hollywood Reporter in an April 7 article, citing « internment camps » and the use of federal troops in cities.

He also criticized leadership, referring to the « clown in charge of the military » in comments about Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

JIMMY KIMMEL SAYS TYRANNY RISING UNDER TRUMP, TAUNTS PRESIDENT OVER SHOW’S RETURN

« The Boys » follows a group of vigilantes who take on corrupt superheroes who abuse their power and stardom. Kripke previously compared the show’s main villain, Homelander, to President Donald Trump.

CONTROVERSIAL ‘STAR TREK’ SPINOFF AXED AFTER RATINGS SUFFER AMID ‘WOKE’ FAN BACKLASH

Despite the sharp political commentary, Kripke maintained that the show’s « quarrel is not with people » but with those in charge. He noted that the writers included a « right-winger » character who is portrayed as a « good guy, » explaining that the show’s focus is on « leaders who are just really problematic. »

JIMMY KIMMEL SPARKS BACKLASH WITH ‘TYRANNY’ JAB AT AMERICA IN UK CHRISTMAS SPEECH

The premiere opens with Homelander, draped in the American flag, speaking at a rally with nationalist imagery. As the crowd chants « U-S-A, » the camera lingers on specific figures, including a pregnant woman and a man in a red hat, who viewers say resembles late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

During the rally, Homelander references « freedom camps » where citizens are imprisoned, uses phrases like « golden dawn » and labels rivals as terrorists.

Kripke told Rolling Stone in 2022 that Homelander has « always been a Trump analogue. »

In 2024, Amazon Prime Video added a disclaimer to the Season 4 finale, originally titled « Assassination Run, » after the attempted assassination of Trump.

While the show remains a hit for Amazon, many fans claim the writing has become too overt.

One user wrote on X, getting nearly 2 million views, « The Boys is another example of the Hollywood left trying to villainize the right and make them look awful. »

A second user wrote that the first 20 minutes of the season included « every liberal buzzword. »

Fox News Digital reached out to Amazon for comment.

  • Swalwell faces expulsion effort following bombshell assault allegations

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., is moving to expel Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., from Congress following reports of alleged sexual misconduct and assault, arguing that he has no place in the House.

Luna joined « Saturday in America » to announce the move, calling for accountability for members of Congress. She said it would be « unacceptable » for Swalwell to end his gubernatorial bid while still getting to remain in office.

Swalwell was accused by a former staffer of sexual assault while she was intoxicated. The San Francisco Chronicle first broke the story of the anonymous ex-staffer, and three additional women have since spoken to CNN with allegations of misconduct.

SWALWELL CAMPAIGN REJECTS ‘OUTRAGEOUS’ ALLEGATIONS OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AS DEM ACTIVISTS ISSUE VIRAL WARNING

Luna argues Swalwell should not remain in office while facing the accusations and plans to bring a disciplinary motion next week.

« If Democrats want to protect this type of garbage, I wouldn’t recommend it, but they’re [going to] be put on the board for that, » Luna said, adding she doesn’t believe he should be paid by the taxpayers while the scandal plays out.

The congresswoman called on the alleged victims to come to her office, saying they « deserve a platform » and that transparency is needed from lawmakers.

  • Iran’s supreme leader severely disfigured by US strikes: report

Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is severely disfigured after suffering leg and face injuries as a result of joint U.S.-Israel airstrikes on Tehran in February, Reuters reported Saturday.

Khamenei is recovering after incurring the injuries in the February 28 airstrikes that killed his father, former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei. He has not been seen publicly since being hospitalized.

Despite the injuries, Khamenei allegedly remains « mentally sharp, » Reuters reported, citing a trio of anonymous sources within his inner circle. The new supreme leader is in communication with the Iranian delegation in Pakistan for peace talks with a U.S. delegation led by Vice President JD Vance.

The Reuters report corroborates an earlier statement from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who told reporters on March 13 that Khamenei was « likely disfigured. »

Despite his weakened condition, Khamenei vowed to put up resistance in a defiant written statement Thursday.

« Iran is not seeking war but will not forfeit its rights and considers all resistance fronts as a unified entity, » the statement read.

Hegseth dismissed the statement as « weak » in his March press conference.

EXILED IRANIAN CROWN PRINCE SAYS REGIME IS ‘CRUMBLING’ AFTER KILLING OF KHAMENEI, OTHER LEADERS

« It was a written statement. Iran has plenty of cameras and plenty of voice recorders. Why a written statement? » Hegseth asked. « I think you know why. His father, dead. He’s scared, he’s injured, he’s on the run and he lacks legitimacy. It’s a mess for them. Who’s in charge? Iran may not even know. »

Sources reportedly told Reuters that Khamenei could enter the public spotlight in a month or two, but only if « his health and the security situation allowed.

While many publicly question where and when we may see the supreme leader again, Iranian hardliners stress the importance of him keeping a low-profile.

« Why should he appear in public? To become a target for these criminals? » an Iranian militiaman asked Reuters in a text message.

  • AI could be coming for your wine as experts turn to technology for industry overhaul

Scientists have created an AI-powered « grape ripeness detector » designed to make wine production more efficient — combining the use of technology with vineyard expertise in pursuit of the best wine for consumers.

The new portable handheld sensor provides instant and accurate data about whether grapes are ready to harvest, scientists in the U.K. say.

Given that harvesting grapes is extremely time-sensitive, researchers at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) have invented a portable optical sensor that uses state-of-the-art machine learning to give winemakers instant information about the ripeness of their grapes, news agency SWNS reported.

SCIENTISTS REVEAL FOUR NEW DISCOVERIES ABOUT HOW BEER AND WINE ACTUALLY AFFECT YOUR BODY

The device removes the need for manual sampling and slow destructive testing, the researchers said.

Xuechun Wang, Ph.D., a post-doctoral researcher at QMUL, specializes in applying machine learning algorithms to building intelligent sensors.

« Our technology uses optical sensors to detect how grapes absorb and reflect different wavelengths of light, » Wang said.

« As grapes ripen, their chemical composition changes — which alters their optical response, » she said.

« By analyzing these spectral patterns using AI algorithms, we can estimate grape ripeness directly on the vine, without damaging the grape. »

The sensor is known as RipenAI.

MAN SLEPT IN HIS TRUCK TO CHASE A DREAM — NOW HE’S PUTTING ARIZONA WINE ON THE NATIONAL MAP

Wang said it could be held by hand, allowing grape pickers to instantly check ripeness before harvesting across the wine industry.

It could also be installed across a vineyard to monitor grapes continuously for ripeness and crop health, she said.

The QMUL team is working on integrating the technology into a robotic grape picker in a related project with Extend Robotics and Saffron Grange Vineyard in Essex, SWNS reported.

The technology is said to promise significant business benefits for winemakers.

Nick Edwards, a director at Saffron Grange Vineyard, said, « Harvesting grapes at the right time is one of the most important decisions a grower makes when producing the best quality wine. This requires careful monitoring of key parameters such as sugar and acidity from veraison through to harvest.

« It’s essential that grapes are picked at their correct level of ripeness. The wine style ultimately defines the ideal harvest window, dictating the balance of sugar, acidity and taste the winemaker is seeking.

IRANIAN REFUGEE BUILDS WORLD-RANKED AMERICAN WINERY ROOTED IN HERITAGE AND HEALTH

« Ripening also varies across vineyards, » Edwards also noted, « depending on factors such as clonal variety, soil type, location, exposure and highly changeable weather. »

He said that « at Saffron Grange, we focus exclusively on producing premium-quality sparkling wines, and data plays a critical role in our harvest decisions. Timely access to accurate ripeness information allows us to forward plan harvest labor and winery preparation with confidence. »

He added, « RipenAI will support this approach by providing non-destructive, real-time insight into grape ripeness across our vineyard. »

With the new technology, winemakers will have « the ability to repeatedly assess the same bunches throughout the ripening period … [delivering] an even clearer picture of ripeness progression than traditional destructive sampling, » SWNS reported.

« Harvesting grapes at precisely the right time also helps minimize the need for interventions such as de-acidification … supporting the production of higher-quality sparkling wines. We are very excited to be part of this project. »

Armed with encouraging early data from field trials at Saffron Grange Vineyard, the scientists are seeking more vineyards, agritech companies and even fruit orchards to help them test a new prototype during the next harvest season, they say.

Professor Lei Su of QMUL added, « RipenAI will shape the future of smart harvesting for a growing industry where timing and precision [make] the difference between success and failure, » referencing Britain’s rapidly expanding wine industry.

The technology is adaptable for apples, berries and more, the creators say.

  • Yankees fans swarm viral ‘fried chicken’ ice cream as $10.99 dessert vanishes in one inning

A viral new treat at Yankee Stadium in New York City was gobbled up almost as soon as it arrived last weekend — flying off concession stands in one inning.

The team’s Mini Dessert « Chicken » Bucket — ice cream designed to resemble a fried chicken drumstick — sold out after drawing intense fan demand during the opening homestand, according to reports.

The dessert features vanilla ice cream coated in caramelized white chocolate and candied cornflakes with a chocolate-covered pretzel « bone. » It quickly became a social media sensation after it was previewed ahead of the 2026 season, as The New York Post reported.

MLB OPENING DAY SERVES UP ALL-STAR FOOD LINEUP THAT KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK

The $10.99 dessert, which comes in a mini souvenir bucket, drew long lines from the outset.

Fans packed concession areas at Yankee Stadium, with some reporting waits of 20 minutes or more just to try the limited-time item.

« Given how well-received the item was on media day, interest from fans was tremendous, and we sold out of the item by the first inning of Saturday’s game, » Yankees senior director of communications Michael Margolis said in a statement to The Athletic after the April 4 game.

The Yankees had initially expected their supply to last through the team’s six-game homestand against the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics, according to reports.

Fans who were lucky enough to snag an order were struck by the uncanny resemblance to a real drumstick.

« It really looks and feels like a drumstick, » one fan told The Athletic. « I would not have known the difference. »

Even veteran Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay — known for rating stadium chicken tenders on social media — gave the dessert high praise.

« It can’t be better, » Kay said in a video review, adding that its quality helps explain why it sold out so quickly.

Online, many fans expressed disappointment that they could not get their hands on the dessert in time.

« They’re all sold out here in the stadium, » one Instagram user commented on Kay’s video, asking, « How did you manage to find one? »

Massachusetts-based content creator Cameron Guzzo tried the treat during a concession preview and gave it a solid 8 out of 10.

« Such a fun idea, » Guzzo said in a TikTok video. « All in all, the flavors work really well together, and it’s a super fun dessert item, but the messiness does knock it down just a hair for me, » he added after the drumstick broke in half, and he nearly dropped it on the floor.

The Yankees’ culinary team, led by executive chef Robert Flowers, has emphasized creative concessions as part of a broader effort to elevate the game-day experience.

The Mini Dessert « Chicken » Bucket was introduced alongside a wide range of new menu items for the 2026 season, including specialty burgers, desserts and international offerings, according to the Major League Baseball (MLB) website.

Among them are bacon cheeseburger dumplings, loaded mac and cheese, apple pie nachos and the buzz-worthy « Petroni Tiramisu » served in a mini Yankees helmet.

The ice cream bucket’s success mirrors past Yankee Stadium hits, such as the « 99 Burger, » named after Bronx Bombers captain Aaron Judge’s No. 99.

But it is not the only stadium food to go viral this season.

The demand highlights a growing trend toward over-the-top and oversized stadium fare, including dishes like the Houston Astros’ « brisket donuts » and the Miami Marlins’ massive folded tortillas, Fox News Digital recently reported.

For now, fans hoping to try the viral ice cream dessert will have to wait.

The Yankees said they plan to notify customers through Instagram posts when the item is restocked.

  • Trump adversary running for Senate borrows his filibuster playbook

One of President Donald Trump’s top Democratic foes running for the Senate is taking a page from his and conservatives’ playbook in their pitch to reform the filibuster.

Democratic Maine Gov. Janet Mills, who is running to unseat longtime Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, released her policy platform in recent days. Among several pitches to voters is a call to reform the filibuster.

Mills, if elected, said in the 19-page document that she would require « Senators to remain on the Senate floor and actually speak, rather than simply threatening a filibuster to delay action. »

The filibuster has become a flashpoint in the Senate, particularly for Republicans, given that its current 60-vote threshold requires legislation to be bipartisan in nature. And Mills’ position, which has been previously supported by Democrats, is one Trump and some in the GOP are pushing for to pass a massive election integrity bill.

GRAHAM EYES ‘DOWN PAYMENT’ ON TRUMP-BACKED SAVE ACT WITHOUT DEMOCRATIC SUPPORT

Her desire to change the filibuster echoes one made by Trump and conservatives, both in Congress and online, that have demanded Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., launch a talking filibuster to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.

« Washington is broken, and Maine people are paying the price, » Mills said in a statement introducing the platform. « Donald Trump and Washington Republicans are undermining our fundamental rights and driving up costs, all while Congress fails to solve the big problems facing Maine people. Enough is enough. Maine people deserve better than what D.C. is giving them. »

Mills and Trump have an adversarial relationship that reached a chaotic crescendo in 2025 when, during a meeting of governors at the White House, she declared, « We’ll see you in court, » over the president’s executive order to deny federal funding to states that allowed transgender athletes to participate in sports.

THUNE ACCUSES CRITICS OF ‘CREATING FALSE EXPECTATIONS’ AMID BACKLASH OVER STALLED SAVE AMERICA ACT

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the Senate GOP’s main campaign arm, warned that Mills’ desired change to the filibuster was a dog whistle for Democrats’ plan to slow-walk Trump’s agenda.

« Janet Mills is saying the quiet part out loud: If she goes to Washington, she will use every tool at her disposal to push her radical anti-Trump agenda on Americans, » NRSC spokesperson Samantha Cantrell told Fox News Digital.

Trump has asked Republicans to go a step further and nuke the filibuster altogether — an unlikely scenario in the Senate, given the lack of support to do away with the guardrail in its current form.

MAINE SENATE CANDIDATE CITES COMBAT TRAUMA WHEN CONFRONTED ON ‘TERRIBLE’ POSTS ABOUT SEXUAL ASSAULT

A talking filibuster, as Mills suggested, would require senators to debate a bill rather than falling back on the typical 60-vote threshold.

The Senate is currently doing a version of the talking filibuster in the GOP’s bid to shine a light on Senate Democrats’ refusal to support the SAVE America Act. But it won’t lead to the legislation passing because the GOP isn’t unified to block Democratic amendments that could drastically alter the bill.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who handpicked Mills to run in Maine against Collins, has dubbed the legislation « Jim Crow 2.0 » and rallied his caucus behind defeating the measure.

Before Mills has a chance to square off against Collins, she’ll first have to survive a tough primary battle against insurgent candidate Graham Platner, an oyster farmer who has the backing of Schumer’s left flank.

Fox News Digital reached out for comment from Mills, Platner and Collins, but did not hear back by publication.

  • Epstein survivors push back on Melania Trump hearing call as Comer vows ‘we will have hearings’

Some Jeffrey Epstein abuse survivors are pushing back on first lady Melania Trump’s call for public congressional testimony, as House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., confirmed Friday « we will have hearings, » following a rare public statement Thursday by Trump at the White House where she came out swinging at those who have linked her to Epstein.

The first lady also called on Congress to conduct hearings « specifically centered around the survivors. »

« Give these victims their opportunity to testify under oath in front of Congress with the power of sworn testimony, » Trump said. « Each and every woman should have her day to tell her story in public if she wishes, and then her testimony should be permanently entered into the Congressional Record. »

But a group of 15 Epstein victims released a joint statement Friday against the move.

« First Lady Melania Trump is now shifting the burden onto survivors, » they said. « Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein have already shown extraordinary courage by coming forward, filing reports, and giving testimony, » they added. « Asking more of them now is a deflection of responsibility, not justice. »

MELANIA TRUMP DENOUNCES ‘LIES’ CONNECTING HER WITH DISGRACED FINANCIER JEFFREY EPSTEIN IN WHITE HOUSE EVENT

Comer said such hearings have always been on his radar.

« I agree with the first lady and appreciate what she said. We will have hearings, » Comer told Fox News’ Sandra Smith. « I’ve always planned on having hearings with the victims.

« My attorneys on the Oversight Committee have been communicating on a constant basis for months with the attorneys representing Epstein victims, » he added. « There are some victims who are willing to come in, [but] most victims aren’t, and I completely understand that, but we have always planned on having a hearing with Epstein’s victims once the depositions have been completed. »

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both sat for closed-door depositions with the House Oversight Committee in February for questioning related to Epstein, and a deposition is forthcoming for Microsoft founder Bill Gates in June.

EPSTEIN’S LAWYER ‘NOT AWARE’ OF ANY RELATIONSHIP TRUMP HAD WITH LATE CONVICTED SEX OFFENDER, COMER SAYS

« The first lady accomplished three things [Thursday] as it relates to the disgraceful Epstein, » the first lady’s senior advisor, Marc Beckman, told « Fox & Friends » Friday. « First, she cleared her record; she set the record straight, she debunked all of the lies surrounding her and Epstein. »

MELANIA TRUMP ADVISOR SAYS SHE’S HAD ‘ENOUGH’ AFTER BREAKING SILENCE TO DENY JEFFREY EPSTEIN CONNECTION

« Second, she became a champion for these women, for the victims, and finally, third, she’s a real leader in Washington, D.C. She’s calling on Congress to act now. »

It is unclear when or how many of the survivors will come forward to testify.

« Survivors have done their part. Now it’s time for those in power to do theirs, » the survivors said in the statement.

  • Vance en route to Pakistan for high-stakes Iran talks as ‘fragile’ ceasefire teeters

Vice President JD Vance is set to arrive in Pakistan early Saturday, where he will lead high-stakes negotiations with Iran aimed at preserving a fragile ceasefire and preventing a broader regional war.

Vance is joined by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, as part of a senior delegation engaging Iranian officials in Islamabad.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will be negotiating for Iran.

The talks, scheduled for Saturday, come over a month after the U.S. launched Operation Epic Fury Feb. 28 — a sweeping military campaign targeting Iran’s military infrastructure following the collapse of nuclear negotiations.

IRAN REVEALS 10-POINT PLAN FOR PEACE WITH THE US – HERE’S WHAT’S IN IT

That operation pushed the U.S. and Iran to the brink of a ground war before a tenuous diplomatic breakthrough in recent days.

Trump announced a two-week ceasefire Tuesday, agreeing to suspend further U.S. strikes on the condition that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.

While Iran signaled it would allow passage through the strait as part of the agreement, traffic remains severely disrupted, with shipping companies hesitant to resume normal operations amid ongoing security concerns and uncertainty over enforcement.

Vance struck a cautious tone before departing, warning Iran not to test the U.S. negotiating posture.

« If they’re gonna try and play us, then they’re gonna find that the negotiating team is not that receptive, » Vance said, adding he still expects the talks to be « positive. »

The outcome of the talks could determine whether the ceasefire holds or collapses into renewed hostilities, as both sides remain deeply divided after weeks of conflict.

Iranian officials have struck a cautious and conditional tone ahead of the talks.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said it accepted the two-week ceasefire but warned « this does not signify the termination of the war, » adding that « our hands remain upon the trigger » if the agreement is violated.

Vance described the agreement Wednesday as a « fragile truce. »

Iran also has tied the success of the ceasefire to developments in Lebanon, insisting that Israeli strikes on Hezbollah must stop as part of any broader agreement. Tehran has warned that continued attacks could jeopardize the talks, highlighting a key dispute with Israel and the U.S., which have argued Lebanon is not covered by the truce.

VANCE WARNS IRAN WILL ‘FIND OUT’ TRUMP IS ‘NOT ONE TO MESS AROUND’ IF CEASEFIRE DEAL FALLS APART

Pakistan has emerged as a key intermediary, positioning itself as a neutral venue between Washington and Iran after helping broker the initial truce. But that role is already facing scrutiny.

Pakistan’s defense minister, Khawaja Asif, sparked backlash recently after calling Israel’s actions a « curse on humanity » in a now-deleted X post and, in a separate exchange, saying critics should « burn in hell. »

The remarks drew a sharp response from Israeli officials, who questioned Pakistan’s credibility as a neutral broker. Israeli leaders described the comments as « outrageous » and warned such rhetoric was incompatible with serving as a mediator, while Israel’s ambassador to India publicly said, « we don’t trust Pakistan. »

Pakistani officials have not directly addressed the controversy surrounding Asif’s remarks but have defended their broader role, emphasizing Islamabad’s efforts to broker the ceasefire and facilitate talks. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for « dialogue and diplomacy, » while officials say both Washington and Iran have expressed confidence in Pakistan’s mediation.

The talks are also unfolding against a challenging security backdrop.

U.S. officials have long treated Pakistan as a high-threat environment for official travel, with strict movement controls and layered security measures typically required for American personnel.

Bill Gage, a former Secret Service agent who traveled to Islamabad with President George W. Bush, told Fox News Digital the threat environment in Pakistan historically has ranked among the most severe faced by U.S. protective teams, requiring constant coordination and heightened precautions.

« The threat environment in Pakistan was one of the worst the Secret Service had ever operated in, » Gage said of his experience in 2006. « We were briefed that al-Qaeda wanted to kidnap an agent, so we always had to be in pairs. »

Pakistan continues to grapple with persistent terrorism threats.

The State Department currently classifies the country as a Level 3 travel risk, warning of potential attacks, crime and kidnapping, and noting that extremist groups have carried out strikes in major cities, including Islamabad.

Still, U.S. officials view the Islamabad meeting as a rare opening for diplomacy, with discussions expected to include nuclear restrictions, sanctions relief and broader regional security issues.

Whether the talks produce a lasting breakthrough or plunge the Middle East back into conflict may hinge on whether both Washington and Iran are willing to move beyond decades of mistrust.

  • Kai Trump shares photos from Augusta National after Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest, treatment departure

Amateur golfer Kai Trump was on hand for one of the sport’s premier events this week. The granddaughter of President Donald Trump traveled to historic Augusta National Golf Club, where she had the opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the world’s top golfers competing for the coveted Masters green jacket.

But Trump traveled to Georgia knowing five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods would be absent. Woods was arrested after a rollover crash in Florida late last month. He later announced he would not compete at this year’s Masters and was granted permission to seek treatment outside the U.S.

Trump’s mother, Vanessa, has been publicly linked to Woods romantically. Vanessa supported Woods amid the fallout from his arrest on DUI charges, writing « Love you » in a post to an Instagram stories post, which featured a photo of the pair.

The 18-year-old Trump shared highlights from her visit to Augusta National in a post on Instagram Thursday, including a photo with LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau and his caddie, Greg Bodine.

« What a special place, » Kai, who is set to take the next step in her golf career at Miami, captioned an Instagram post with a heart emoji.

TIGER WOODS’ ENTIRE SOBRIETY TEST CAUGHT ON BODYCAM FOOTAGE: ‘I’M GETTING ARRESTED?’

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said Woods was traveling at « a high rate of speed » when his vehicle collided with another car, causing it to roll over onto the driver’s side.

Authorities said Woods « exemplified signs of impairment. » He blew « triple-zeroes » for alcohol but refused a urine test.

« DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. They did several tests on him. Of course, he did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had. We did take that into account, but they did do some in-depth roadside tests, » a sheriff’s department spokesperson said.

Woods pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges. Before his arrest, he indicated that playing the season’s first major was a possibility.

In the 14 majors since he won the green jacket in 2019, Woods has failed to muster a top 20 finish. It’s his longest such streak since failing to finish in the top 20 in the first six majors of his career in 1995 and 1996. In his last 26 majors, he has only four top 20 finishes.

Since finishing tied for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, his best finish in his 18 official events since then has been a tie for 37th at the 2020 PGA Championship.

Woods has not competed in a professional golf tournament since 2024, when he competed in just five events — the Genesis Invitational and the four majors. He withdrew from the Genesis, finished dead last in the Masters and missed the cut in the other majors.

  • Outraged passengers say parents ditched rowdy kids in coach while they upgraded to first class

Outraged flight passengers are complaining this week that three rambunctious children were left unsupervised in coach while the parents sat comfortably in first class, according to a viral Reddit post.

« United is now offering free babysitting, » a passenger joked in the social media post, describing an apparently chaotic United Airlines flight from Houston to Fort Lauderdale.

The children — whose estimated ages were 7, 9, and 10 — sat in row 8, according to the post. The observer speculated that the parents were « upgraded to first class, » leaving the little ones behind as the adults relaxed on their own up front.

« Thirty minutes before landing — the boys start pounding on each other — punches, choking each other, super-loud talking to the point of almost screaming. The little girl ends up with as much slack in her seat belt as possible, » the poster on Reddit wrote.

« Parents are upgraded, so [they] had a nice, relaxing flight while a select few of us kept an eye on the misbehaved children, » the United passenger suggested to others on Reddit.

« At what point should the flight attendant have stepped in and requested the parents realign to supervise their children? » the user added.

Fox News Digital reached out to United Airlines for comment.

Several commenters on Reddit weighed in on the flight drama.

« There are two types of parents: Those who actually parent, and then those who are nothing more than bad camp counselors who want to clock out when their shift is done, » one person said.

Another said, « If that happened, one parent has to stay with the children, and one child gets upgraded or nobody is upgraded. Some people can be so selfish. »

« I would have gone up to first and — loudly — fetched the dad, » yet another person wrote.

Others felt the angry passengers should have spoken up about the issue to flight attendants.

« Why didn’t someone just push the call button? » one Reddit user wrote.

« Just ring your call bell, and when the flight attendant arrives, point over to them and put your headphones back on, » another quipped.

Etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore of Florida told Fox News Digital that children under age 12 should generally not be left unsupervised on a flight.

« I think a parent should have stayed back with them because of their age, » she said.

Whitmore said that in these cases, a flight attendant should ask the children where the parents are — and a parent should be notified.

« That’s what flight attendants are there for — safety and to keep peace in the cabin, » she said.

She also noted that many children struggle to stay in their seats on long flights.

« Some children listen, some don’t, » she said. « Most children in a confined area are very uncomfortable. They want to run up and down the aisles. That’s just what children do. »

Federal regulations, however, do not currently require airlines to guarantee adjacent seating.

The department maintains an online dashboard that outlines which carriers commit to seating children age 13 and under next to an accompanying adult without an added fee.

Some major carriers do not commit to providing fee-free guaranteed adjacent seating, including Delta, Spirit, Allegiant and United, according to the DOT dashboard.

Several airlines, however, state that they will seat children ages 13 and under next to an accompanying adult at no additional cost under certain conditions.

Those carriers include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier, Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue.
