As Russia-Ukraine gas deal ends, worries mount in EU’s east

Russian gas exports via Ukraine came to a halt on New Year’s Day, after Kyiv had refused to renew a transit deal hailing this as “Russia’s biggest defeat.” But some EU countries are scrambling to meet their energy needs.
