  • Why Trump, Iran seem light-years apart on any possible deal to end the war

The fog of war usually refers to maddening confusion about what is happening on the battlefield.

But right now we have the fog of peace talks: Are they real, are they going anywhere, and which side is telling the truth?

It’s clear that President Trump, insisting he can end the war with Iran whenever he wants, is looking for an exit ramp to declare victory and get out.

WINNING THE BATTLES, LOSING THE WAR? AMERICA MUST DEFINE THE ENDGAME IN IRAN

It’s just as clear that the theocratic dictatorship–at least the leaders who survived the attacks that killed the ayatollah and many others–are digging in their heels. They will claim victory just for surviving the military onslaught that has decimated their navy and air force.

When Trump said there were back-channel talks–granting a five-day delay on threats to obliterate its energy facilities–the Iranians flatly denied it. Some prominent pundits doubted Trump. But then Tehran said yeah, well, there have been some secret contacts.

Now we have starkly different accounts of what’s going down.

Trump says the talks have been « very good. » The other day, in fact, he depicted the mullahs as making a major concession.

The Iranians have given the U.S. « a very big present, worth a tremendous amount of money, » Trump said. He was cagey about it, but revealed under questioning by CBS’s Ed O’Keefe that it involved the flow of oil and the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time, Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari taunted the administration in a video: « Has the level of your internal conflict reached the point where you are negotiating with yourselves? »

« Do not call your defeat an agreement, » he said.

And for good measure: « Someone like us will never come to terms with someone like you. Not now, not ever. »

TRUMP SAYS US, ISRAEL SHATTERED IRANIAN MILITARY CAPABILITIES, PRESSES LEADERS TO SURRENDER: ‘CRY UNCLE’

Now some of this is undoubtedly done for domestic consumption. But the two sides sound like they couldn’t be farther apart.

The president has delivered a flurry of mixed messages on the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passageway where an Iranian blockade has choked off one-fifth of the world’s oil traffic. He has said that the situation will work itself out. He has said our European allies (who refused to join our effort to intervene) should resolve this since the U.S. doesn’t rely on the strait. And he has also said that opening Hormuz is a top American priority.

Iran, which has sprinkled the strait with mines, told the U.N. that the waterway is open to any country not backing the U.S. and Israeli attacks. But other nations, and their insurance companies, are reluctant to send billion-dollar tankers into such troubled waters.

The impasse is hurting the president here at home, where soaring oil costs have boosted gas prices and tanked the stock market, shrinking the value of all those 401Ks. When Trump announced the bombing pause Monday, the market snapped back for a day. If there’s one thing Wall Street hates, it’s uncertainty.

Despite signaling that the war is practically over because « we’ve won, » Trump just dispatched at least 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne to the Middle East, along with the USS Tripoli, carrying 2,200 Marines.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has been playing the bad cop, vowing if there’s no deal « to destroy the enemy as viciously as possible. »

What’s equally unclear is who we’re talking to, with Pakistan playing the intermediary role. Trump has talked about regime change, though there seems no chance of that, and there’s chatter about doing business with the speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Ghalibaf, a former Revolutionary Guard commander who at times has taken a diplomatic approach with the West.

But with so many leaders killed and Ayatollah Khamenei’s son in hiding, no one knows how much influence Ghalibaf, a failed presidential candidate, still has.

Just yesterday, Ghalibaf, invoking the Israeli prime minister, warned the administration against sacrificing American soldiers for « Netanyahu’s delusions, » according to al-Jazeera. That hardly sounds conciliatory.

What’s more, the Iranians are famously difficult to negotiate with, going back on promises and moving the goalposts. Just ask Jimmy Carter.

Trump tore up the Obama administration’s nuke deal with the Iranians when he first took office, and now says he wants an agreement in which they renounce the pursuit of nuclear weapons. That is extremely unlikely, although the U.S. attacks last June and this month have obviously crippled their efforts.

My sense is that Trump doesn’t want to bomb Iran’s oil and gas facilities, which would clearly extend the war and widen a conflict that has already spread to the surrounding Arab countries. Nor does he want to be seen as backing down. No wonder he’s postponed a showdown.

WHO ACTUALLY RUNS IRAN RIGHT NOW? THE KEY POWER PLAYERS AS TRUMP CLAIMS TALKS TO ‘TOP’ OFFICIAL

« President Trump does not bluff and he is prepared to unleash hell, » White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said yesterday.

The Iranians don’t want a temporary pause in the war, unnamed officials told the New York Times, out of concern that the U.S. and Israel would use the time to rebuild their forces for further airstrikes.

Iran’s only real weapon right now is drones, a few of which have caused damage in Israel, while others are aimed at U.S. military bases in the region. One drone sparked a huge fire at the Kuwaiti airport.

A report by the state broadcaster, Press TV, confirms that Iran won’t accept the U.S. proposal for a cease-fire. In its counter-offer, the dictatorship would also keep sole control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Among other demands, according to Press TV: Guarantees that the attacks on Iran won’t be started up again, and the payment of war damages and reparations. Iran wants any deal extended to Hezbollah, its Lebanese proxy, which fired rockets at Israel when the war began, triggering an invasion of southern Lebanon.

Another state media outlet, Fars News Agency, quoted a source as saying of a cease-fire: « It is not logical to enter into such a process with those who violate the agreement. »

The president has lashed out at the media for painting a relentlessly negative picture of a war that has largely been an American triumph. But it turns out that covering the endgame — if that’s what this is — is equally challenging.

At the moment, it looks like Trump wants a deal more than Iran, given the war’s unpopularity at home and its damage to the economy. For an America First candidate who ran against foreign wars, the prospect of a long, Iraq-style quagmire would be the worst possible outcome.

« Is the U.S. Repeating the Mistakes That Led to Forever Wars? » the Wall Street Journal asked yesterday.

But the coverage of the latest rhetorical sniping accurately reflects the vagueness of a process that may not deserve to be called negotiations.

It is, above all, a blinding fog.

  • Missing woman’s sister says Nancy Guthrie case now a ‘hope roller coaster’ for family as search continues

As the search for Nancy Guthrie stretches past 50 days with no answers, one woman who has spent more than two decades searching for her own missing sister says this is the moment families fear most – when urgency begins to fade and the fight for answers becomes even harder.

Julie Murray, whose sister Maura Murray vanished in New Hampshire in 2004, said what the Guthrie family is experiencing right now is something she recognizes immediately.

« What they’re going through is something you never forget, » Murray said. « You can see it on their faces. You can hear the desperation in their voices. »

Murray said cases often begin with an intense surge of attention, resources, media coverage and public engagement, but that momentum can fade, leaving families to carry the burden.

METAL DETECTOR SCANS FRONT YARD OF SAVANNAH GUTHRIE’S MISSING MOTHER AS SISTER TO GET CAR BACK

« Most families… have to fight to be heard and beg for that level of attention, » she said. « And some families don’t get any at all. »

That attention, she emphasized, can be lifesaving.

« Media pressure saves lives. »

NANCY GUTHRIE’S NEIGHBOR NOTICED ‘ATYPICAL’ PET BEHAVIOR NIGHT OF DISAPPEARANCE, EARLIER DATE: REPORT

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen Feb. 1 after being dropped off at her Tucson, Arizona home. Authorities believe she was taken against her will in the early morning hours.

Surveillance video captured a masked man, described as average height and build, approaching her home carrying a black backpack and what appeared to be a handgun. Investigators say Guthrie’s phone and watch were later recovered inside the home, while her pacemaker last synced with her Apple devices around 2:30 a.m., helping establish a possible timeline.

Despite weeks of investigation, authorities have not announced a suspect. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said Guthrie was likely targeted.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE’S $1M REWARD MIRRORS PAST KIDNAPPING CASES SOLVED BY CASH

The case has drawn national attention, driven in part by emotional public appeals from Guthrie’s daughter, NBC « Today » anchor Savannah Guthrie.

« Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony, » Guthrie said in a preview of her first formal interview since her mother’s disappearance.

In the same interview, she described the toll the uncertainty has taken.

NANCY GUTHRIE UPDATE: SEARCH FOR SAVANNAH GUTHRIE’S MISSING MOTHER ENTERS SEVENTH WEEK WITH NO ARRESTS

« I wake up every night in the middle of the night… and in the darkness, I imagine her terror, » she said. « She needs to come home now. »

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the FBI tip line.

Murray said the level of attention surrounding the Guthrie case can generate a surge of tips, but not all are actionable.

DID NANCY GUTHRIE’S ABDUCTOR RETURN TO THE CRIME SCENE?

« You’re begging the public for information, but at the same time you’re getting speculation and hearsay, » she said. « Some of those tips you just can’t chase down. »

Her family, she said, still receives tips more than 20 years after her sister vanished, none of which have led to answers.

Each one, however, carries emotional weight.

« I call it the hope roller coaster, » Murray said. « You want it to be the one that breaks the case open… and then it doesn’t. »

Retired LAPD Detective Moses Castillo said that emotional toll is already visible in the Guthrie family’s public appeals.

« You can feel every ounce of her pain, her strength, and her desperation, » Castillo said. « That kind of resolve matters. It moves people. It forces attention. »

NANCY GUTHRIE SUSPECT’S DIGITAL ‘BLACKOUT’ MAY BE KEY TO CASE, SAYS EXPERT WHO PROBED KOHBERGER PHONE

He described Savannah Guthrie’s interview as « a call to action » that could help generate new leads.

Murray warned that one of the most difficult turning points in a case comes when investigators exhaust immediate leads.

For Murray’s family, that moment came just weeks after Maura disappeared.

« The worst day wasn’t the day she went missing, » she said. « It was the day we were told they had done all they could. »

« Trust becomes a casualty, » Murray said, warning that some individuals attempt to exploit high-profile cases or spread misinformation.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance to contact the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI. A combined reward of more than $1 million is being offered for information leading to her return.

  • Gorman family calls out Johnson and Pritzker following college student’s killing in Chicago

The family of Sheridan Gorman is pushing back on comments from Chicago and Illinois leaders, saying her killing was not a « senseless tragedy » and demanding accountability for what they call systemic failures.

18-year-old Gorman was killed on March 19 at around 1:06 a.m. while she was with friends at a pier on the city’s Rogers Park area. Officials say that Jose Medina-Medina, 25, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, allegedly fired one shot at the Loyola University Chicago student, killing her. Medina-Medina was apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, and was released into the U.S. under the Biden administration, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Gorman family on Wednesday released a statement criticizing both Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, saying that her death « demands accountability. »

« What happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to a ‘senseless tragedy,’ nor can it be explained in general terms about public safety. Sheridan was our daughter. She was 18 years old. She was doing something entirely normal—walking near her campus with friends. She should be here, » the Gorman family said regarding recent comments by Johnson.

ANGEL PARENTS SLAM ILLINOIS SANCTUARY LAWS AFTER ‘PREVENTABLE’ TRAGEDY IN STUDENT’S DEATH

« Calling this ‘senseless’ is not enough. There must be a clear and honest accounting of what went wrong, » the family added. « We will not allow Sheridan’s life to be reduced to a talking point or a generalization. We expect leadership that is willing to confront hard truths and ensure that what happened to her does not happen again. »

Gorman’s family also responded to Gov. Pritzker’s recent comments on the freshman college student’s death, writing that « calling this a tragedy is not enough. »

« Sheridan’s death cannot be reduced to a general « tragedy, » nor can it be explained away by broad references to failures somewhere else. Sheridan was a daughter, a sister, and a young woman whose life was taken in a way that should never have been possible, » the family said. « We are not interested in political arguments or in watching responsibility shift from one place to another. If there were failures—as the Governor himself has acknowledged—then every one of them must be identified, examined, and addressed directly. The location of those failures matters less than the willingness to confront them honestly. »

« Our daughter is not a policy debate. She is a life that was taken, and that demands accountability, » they added.

Pritzker on Tuesday shifted blame to the Trump administration during an event, according to the Chicago Tribune.

« This has been a terrible tragedy, and I know that the Gorman family has suffered mightily… There have been real failures. Those failures, of course, extend beyond the borders of Illinois. That’s their national failures, a failure to have comprehensive immigration reform, a failure of the president to follow his own edict to go after the worst of the worst, » Pritzker said.

Johnson on Tuesday also addressed Gorman’s death, saying that her life was taken due to « senseless violence, » but called out President Trump as well.

« There’s no words that one could express that could properly console a family that lost their baby. And my condolences to the Gorman family, » Johnson said. « You know what the bigger threat to our public safety, it’s illegal weapons that are being trafficked from bordering states that voted for Donald Trump. This president refuses to be held accountable. And he points the finger at everything and everyone else versus doing some real self-reflection on what his responsibility is. »

« We know that this president has not taken this situation in this challenge in our country seriously, because my question would be, isn’t it time for the president of the United States of America in Congress to actually act and pass comprehensive immigration reform? » Johnson continued.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, White House Spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said President Donald Trump’s immigration policies have kept Americans safe.

« In record time, President Trump has totally secured the border, ended Biden’s border crisis, and deported countless dangerous criminal illegal aliens. Those are real solutions that keep the American people safe. Meanwhile, slobs like Pritzker have constantly defended dangerous criminal illegal aliens and attempted to obstruct the important work of the Trump Administration. Pritzker’s policies make the American people less safe, » Jackson said.

Homes in Yorktown Heights, New York, Gorman’s hometown, were lit up in green on Tuesday night to honor the slain Chicago college student. according to CBS News.

An arrest report obtained by obtained by Fox News Digital shows that Medina-Medina was seen on security video in his apartment building’s lobby waiting for an elevator while unmasked after the alleged shooting. A building engineer told police that he knew the suspect, who had a « very distinct limp and gait. »

Police said Medina-Medina was wearing a black mask and black clothing as he walked away from the shooting, noting that he had a « distinct limp and slow gait. » He was seen walking from the location of the shooting to Pratt Boulevard at 1:12 a.m. Just a few minutes later, the individual was seen walking northbound through the east alley of Sheridan Road before he entered the back of his apartment complex.

Images of the suspect were sent to a police database, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection identified the suspect as Medina-Medina. He was arrested at his apartment in Rogers Park, according to the arrest report.

Medina-Medina told officials in 2023 that he was living at Leone Beach Park fieldhouse in Rogers Park in 2023, which was being used as a city-sponsored shelter for migrants. The shelter closed in 2024, according to South Side Weekly.

  • DOJ settles with Michael Flynn over Russia probe after wrongful prosecution claim: ‘Historic injustice’

The Department of Justice (DOJ) reached a settlement Wednesday with Michael Flynn, the former national security advisor to President Donald Trump, over a legal battle tied to his contacts with a Russian diplomat during the Mueller probe.

Official court papers seen by Fox News Digital do not disclose the financial terms of the settlement, but the government is said to be paying Flynn approximately $1.2 million to resolve the matter, The Associated Press reported.

The agreement concludes a lengthy legal saga stemming from the Russia investigation.

Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, pleaded guilty on Dec. 1, 2017, to giving false statements to the FBI about his communications with Russia’s ambassador to the United States.

JAMES COMEY SEEKS TO DISMISS HIS CRIMINAL CASE, CITING ‘VINDICTIVE’ PROSECUTION

Those discussions included Russia’s response to U.S. sanctions and a United Nations Security Council resolution regarding Israel.

The charge stemmed from Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and possible links between Trump campaign officials and Russian figures.

Mueller, a former FBI director who led the bureau from 2001 to 2013, later served as special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, a probe that shadowed much of Trump’s presidency.

He brought charges against multiple Trump associates, including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Flynn.

JUDGE ORDERS DOJ TO GIVE COMEY GRAND JURY RECORDS, CITING PROSECUTOR’S MISCONDUCT

His final report detailed extensive contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia, but did not establish a criminal conspiracy. Flynn later sought to withdraw his guilty plea and accused federal prosecutors of acting in bad faith.

By 2019, he claimed innocence, citing alleged FBI misconduct.

Although Flynn was pardoned by Trump in late 2020, he filed a lawsuit in 2023 seeking at least $50 million in damages, alleging wrongful and malicious prosecution.

He argued the case, brought by what he described as a « virulently anti-Trump leadership » within the FBI, cost him tens of millions of dollars in business opportunities and future earning potential.

FORMER FBI DIRECTOR ROBERT MUELLER DIES AT 81; TRUMP REACTS

Under the previous administration, the DOJ moved to dismiss Flynn’s complaint. Now, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, a critic of the Russia probe, the department changed course.

In a statement, the DOJ called the settlement an « important step in redressing » what it described as a « historic injustice, » The Associated Press reported.

A spokesperson said the department will pursue accountability to ensure such « weaponization of the federal government » does not recur.

According to a notice of settlement filed in the Middle District of Florida, the case will be dismissed with prejudice once Flynn confirms receipt of the funds, preventing the claims from being refiled.

The filing states each party will bear its own legal costs and that the court will not retain jurisdiction over the agreement.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the DOJ for comment.

  • ‘Mormon Wives’ star claims estranged husband lived double life with escorts, sex parties

Jessi Draper leveled explosive claims against her estranged husband as divorce drama heats up between the two.

The « Secret Lives of Mormon Wives » star accused Jordan Ngatikaura of contacting an escort service and attending sex parties during their nearly six-year marriage.

Draper said she ended her marriage to Ngatikaura because of irreconcilable differences, but claimed her estranged husband instead blamed her for an affair in his divorce filing – referring to « Vanderpump Villa » star Maricano Brunette. Draper has claimed she only kissed Brunette and viewers watched the allegations come out during season three of « Mormon Wives. »

« But the ironic thing about that is, I do have proof and screenshots that when season one dropped – I had an escort service reach out to me, and they sent me screenshots of [Ngatikaura’s] phone number and messages, and he was trying to meet up with them, » Draper said during an appearance on « Call Her Daddy. »

‘MORMON WIVES’ STAR SAYS PLASTIC SURGERY NIGHTMARE RUINED HER LIFE AND REALITY TV CAREER

« He got a hotel room and I have all of that, » Draper added. « And so … I protected him through all the Marciano stuff, and he denied it to me when I brought it to him. And he said, ‘We’re in Hollywood now. People are gonna try to do this to tear us apart. It’s probably AI.’ »

« But it wasn’t, it was real. »

Draper continued to expose her estranged husband’s alleged behavior, pointing to information she learned from her sister. According to Draper, a friend approached her sister and brother-in-law recently while at dinner and asked if the couple was still married, claiming, « ‘I go to these parties, and he’s always there and especially when they had their daughter, he was there a lot.’ »

While the 33-year-old claimed she didn’t have proof that Ngatikaura attended these alleged parties, it was her « final straw. »

« Like I needed to hear this to like be OK with moving on, » she told host Alexandra Cooper.

She revealed it’s her belief that the parties are « orgies » or sex parties.

« I don’t know what other kind of parties you would pay for, » she said. « Like you just go to a party, you know? So that’s what I have to believe. »

« I’ve actually never asked him about this, » Draper continued. « I’ve just heard about it. But the funny thing is, I heard through my sister who heard from someone who was there, and now it’s also being reported. So I’m like, clearly there’s some truth to it. »

Fox News Digital reached out to Ngatikaura for comment.

Ngatikaura filed for divorce from Draper on March 19. The two share two children: Jagger, 5, and Jovi, 3. Ngatikaura is also a father to a daughter, Peyton, from a previous relationship. Draper’s friends and family have been supportive of the couple’s decision to end the marriage amid all the explosive allegations.

« [My friends] were like, ‘He’s disgusting.’ To be fair, everyone in my life – friends, family, employees – everyone hates him, » she noted. « When I got divorced, everyone I’ve told so far, it’s been like, ‘Congratulations.’ Not one person has been like, ‘I’m so sorry.’ »

Cooper noted even the public has been supportive of Draper’s divorce. The hair stylist explained it’s been « validating » to see after being in denial.

« Because I’m like ‘OK, I made the right decision, you know, like if everyone feels this way, there’s gotta be a reason.’ Because I was a little bit in denial for a while. »

« The View » co-host Whoopi Goldberg was rebuked by her fellow co-hosts on Tuesday after saying she had to present her driver’s license to vote during a discussion about the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

The SAVE Act, backed by President Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers, would require proof of citizenship to vote.

« I’m sorry, you have to present your ID when you go to vote. I always have to give them my driver’s license so they can make sure that it’s me, » Goldberg said.

Co-host Sunny Hostin said, « You don’t have to do that in New York. »

TWO DOZEN HOUSE REPUBLICANS GO TO WAR WITH SENATE GOP OVER SAVE AMERICA ACT

    « I didn’t have to do it, » co-host Sara Haines added.

    Co-host Joy Behar asked, « You don’t? »

But Goldberg continued, « They have all this information in the — in the voter registration. »

CONNECTICUT DEMS DEMAND IDS TO RECYCLE CANS BUT REJECT GOP EFFORTS TO VERIFY CITIZENSHIP AT POLLS

Hostin said the Trump administration was suing states for voter registration information, which she said was « very personal information. »

« Well, you know what? A lot of information that we have given away ourselves is very personal information, which has allowed them to go in and get information you probably shouldn’t give away. But my point is, we have all the things in place. What is it? What is this about? I don’t want to have to go get my stuff, » Goldberg responded.

Hostin said the GOP was pushing the SAVE Act because they lack good policy and are trying to cheat.

« If you don’t have good policies, you need to, um, gerrymander votes and — and cheat, » she said.

Democrats, such as Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, have compared the SAVE Act to Jim Crow laws.

« I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, the SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow-type laws to the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate, » Schumer said in February. « It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to… The SAVE Act is reminiscent of Jim Crow era laws and would expand them to the whole of America. Republicans want to restore Jim Crow and apply it from one end of this country to the other. It will not happen. »

  • Progressive streamer backing Mamdani says Cubans are ‘partying in the f—— streets’ amid energy crisis

Hasan Piker, a progressive media personality and streamer, downplayed the severity of rolling blackouts in Cuba while on a recent trip to the communist island, telling viewers that the population was « partying. »

« There are rolling blackouts that take place throughout the day, every day, all around the country. But today is a beautiful day out here. People are partying. People are partying in the f—— streets. I don’t know if it’s an island mindset, » Piker said.

The remarks come as U.S. officials warn the island faces a deepening energy crisis, highlighting a stark divide between firsthand accounts and government assessments.

Piker, who has supported self-declared progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, praised the Cubans for their endurance.

« The people’s resilience is remarkable. There are rolling blackouts that take place throughout the day, every day, all around the country, right? 11 million people. »

POST-MADURO, PRESSURE BUILDS ON MEXICO OVER CUBA’S NEW OIL LIFELINE

Piker’s descriptions come as Cuba’s communist regime finds itself choked off from access to energy imports after a U.S. operation in Venezuela resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year.

According to the Department of State, Cuba began to experience energy shortages shortly afterward.

« Understand that Cuba has largely survived on the basis of subsidies. The Maduro regime was providing them fuel, » Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a press event at the White House.

« So, the reason why Cuba’s electricity grid was already in collapse — before Maduro was captured, it was already in collapse — the reason why things are as bad as they are is because they have an economic model that does not work. It’s not functional, » Rubio said.

CUBAN ACTIVIST TO TRUMP: ‘MAKE CUBA GREAT AGAIN’ BY ENDING COMMUNIST RULE

President Donald Trump has characterized the energy crisis as severe and said he believes public unrest has strengthened U.S. influence over the island.

« I do believe I’ll be the honor of taking Cuba… That’s a big honor. They’re a very weakened nation right now. They were for a long time, » Trump told reporters last week.

Trump did not expand on what he meant by « taking » the island.

Piker’s characterizations, however, contrast sharply with the way the administration has framed the on-the-ground circumstances on the island.

RUBIO SAYS CUBA NEEDS ‘NEW PEOPLE IN CHARGE’ AS BLACKOUTS, UNREST GRIP ISLAND

« A lot of the info that you see and hear from the island is like directly coming from like, most of the time, National Endowment for Democracy-Foundation-backed individuals, State Department propaganda, things like that, » Piker said, referring to a pro-Democracy group.

« It’s very difficult to get information out of here. Even though it’s so close, » he added. « They’re just chilling. Cubans they vibe, »

Piker did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.

  • Savannah Guthrie says family in ‘agony’ in first interview since mother Nancy’s disappearance

« Today » anchor Savannah Guthrie said her family is in « agony » in her first interview since her mother Nancy was taken from her Arizona home and reported missing on Feb. 1.

« Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony, we are in agony, » a tearful Guthrie told co-host Hoda Kotb in a preview of the interview that will air over the course of the week.

Nancy Guthrie’s case has dominated headlines for weeks, but authorities have been unable to find her in the suspected kidnapping.

Her daughter called the situation « unbearable. »

NANCY GUTHRIE’S SUSPECTED ABDUCTION: TIMELINE OF EVENTS IN DISAPPEARANCE OF ‘TODAY’ HOST’S MOM

« And to think of what she went through. I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night, » she told Kotb. « And in the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought. And I will not hide my face. But she needs to come home now. »

Guthrie has been away from the show since her mother went missing but returned to the Rockefeller Center studio to visit colleagues on March 6. Kotb has been anchoring alongside Craig Melvin while Guthrie is away from the show.

« Today » will air the reminder of the interview in two parts on Thursday and Friday.

Guthrie is believed to have been taken against her will, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. Her son-in-law dropped her off at home around 10 p.m. the night before she went missing. In the early morning hours, a masked man appeared on her doorstep.

At around 2:30 a.m., her pacemaker made its last sync with her Apple devices, indicating a potential timeframe of when she was taken out of the home. Her watch and iPhone were recovered inside.

Authorities have been unable to catch a suspect or find her so far, and the « Today » anchor has posted several videos pleading for her mother’s return.

This is a developing story, more to come…

Fox News Digital’s Michael Ruiz contributed to this report.

  • Serious about safer roads? Get dangerous, unqualified truckers off them now

If you’re hauling freight on America’s highways, safety isn’t optional. It’s the price of admission.

That principle is at the heart of Dalilah’s Law, which the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passed today.

Backed by President Trump during last month’s State of the Union, this legislation reinforces a fundamental principle: only properly trained and qualified professionals should be behind the wheel of an 80,000-pound truck. It strengthens safety standards, ensures drivers can understand and communicate in English, and closes loopholes that have allowed unqualified or improperly licensed individuals to slip through the cracks — making roads safer for everyone.

FAMILY PUSHES FOR ‘DALILAH’S LAW’ AFTER TRUMP HONORS GIRL CRITICALLY INJURED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT TRUCK DRIVER

Dalilah’s Law is named for a young girl whose life was forever changed by a preventable crash involving an undocumented immigrant behind the wheel of a commercial truck.

Speeding through a construction zone, this reckless driver hit the car five-year-old Dalilah Coleman was traveling in, leaving her with permanent disabilities that will require lifelong care. It is a devastating example of what happens when safety standards are not upheld or enforced.

SOME STATES HAVE LET UNQUALIFIED FOREIGN DRIVERS ON THE ROAD AND AMERICANS PAY THE PRICE

In the years following COVID-19, a surge in freight demand brought an influx of opportunity seekers into our industry. While many answered the call responsibly, others chased quick profits without respecting the safety standards on which the industry depends. When enforcement slips, safety suffers. And that’s when tragedies like Dalilah’s happen. We saw it in Florida. We saw it in California. We saw it in Indiana.

Dalilah’s Law addresses these gaps head-on.

DUFFY EXPOSES 54% OF NORTH CAROLINA TRUCK LICENSES ISSUED ILLEGALLY TO ‘DANGEROUS DRIVERS’

It ensures consistent enforcement of English-language proficiency requirements during roadside inspections and makes clear that drivers who cannot meet those standards should be placed out of service. It modernizes the driver record notification system, so motor carriers are promptly alerted if a driver’s commercial driver’s license (CDL) has been revoked, suspended, or is otherwise invalid. And it requires the Department of Transportation to strengthen oversight of training providers, ensuring new drivers receive the instruction they need to operate safely.

Just as importantly, it reinforces accountability across the CDL system. States play a central role in issuing licenses, and consistent, rigorous enforcement is critical. By closing gaps and improving coordination, this legislation helps remove bad actors from the road while supporting the vast majority who are doing the job the right way.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION

This is what it looks like when government and industry work together to fix a real problem. President Trump, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Rep. David Rouzer, and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee have answered the call to strengthen roadway safety.

At its core, trucking is about trust. Americans trust that the goods they rely on will arrive safely. They trust that the trucks they share the road with are operated by qualified professionals. And they trust that the system overseeing this industry is working as it should.

Dalilah’s story is a painful reminder of what’s at stake when we fall short. This legislation is our opportunity to make sure we don’t.

There’s no room for shortcuts when lives are on the line. Congress must pass Dalilah’s Law.

  • John Fetterman, under fire from fellow Democrats, breaks with the party’s dictates and often sides with Trump

John Fetterman used to be known, sadly, as the guy who had the stroke.

And maybe the man who always wore the hoodie.

    That has dramatically changed.

Now the Pennsylvania senator has alienated much of his own Democratic Party with an independent streak that often finds him siding with the Trump administration.

JOHN FETTERMAN SAYS TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME IS THE ‘LEADER’ OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Now he’s become Joe Manchin, who drove the Biden people crazy by resisting many of their liberal initiatives.

But I’d go further than that. I think he’s become more like the late John McCain — without the POW part, of course — as a maverick who seems to delight in breaking with party orthodoxy. The Republican McCain, you’ll recall, was a champion of campaign finance reform with an actual Democrat in Russ Feingold.

Is Fetterman paying a price? Oh, yeah.

Fetterman’s popularity has taken a beating. In 2023, he was at plus 68 points. Now he’s at negative 40 points. That is a 108-point swing, absolutely stunning.

FETTERMAN OPENS UP ABOUT NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE AND HOW IT CHANGED HIS APPROACH TO POLITICS

Now some Democrats are openly talking about a primary challenge against Fetterman in 2028, assuming he runs again.

In an appearance on Fox News, Fetterman explained his latest transgression: voting to confirm President Trump’s pick, Markwayne Mullin, as Homeland Security secretary, and proved to be the deciding vote in getting his nomination out of committee. Mullin was just confirmed.

« I believe in a very secure border, » Fetterman told Lara Trump. « We also agreed that we should deport all of the criminals. My friend Markwayne and I, we agree on that…

« I know I’m going to take a lot of Democratic blowback, which is strange to me, because there wasn’t really a lot of Democratic outrage when 300,000 people were encountered at our border during the prior administration. I was…We might be in the same Democratic Party, but clearly they didn’t have a problem with that open-border situation. »

He added: « That may isolate me with some people in my party. But that’s not country over party. »

Country over party? Does the concept even exist anymore in this hyperpolarized age? That sentiment used to be admired. Now, not so much.

Let’s face it, Democrats would have voted against any DHS nominee this side of Bernie Sanders simply because that person was picked by Trump.

In the same vein, Fetterman has largely supported the president’s war against Iran, the world’s leading terror state since 1979, again breaking with Chuck Schumer and the party line, which is that the attack can only be criticized.

FETTERMAN CONDEMNED BY CARVILLE FOR SUPPORTING IRAN WAR, SAYS HE’S ALWAYS ON WRONG SIDE OF ISSUES

On X, Fetterman alluded to the fact that he had urged President Trump to fire Kristi Noem.

He’s also said that his party is motivated by Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS).

James Carville, who admits to suffering from TDS and has attacked Trump in obscenity-filled tirades, has also been ripping Fetterman.

« Can I say a public prayer? » Carville said on a podcast. « John Fetterman, whatever you do, keep your position. Don’t change. We don’t want you. Stay right where you are. Because you’ve been wrong about every (expletive) thing that you’ve ever said, and we don’t want you to break your streak. »

Fetterman responded to Carville in his Fox News interview: « Jim has been struggling for relevance for the last 30 years now. I’m proud to be on the right side of Epic Fury. I’m proud to be on the right side about staying in with Israel…

« He acknowledged that [he’s] blinded by TDS. I’m a guy that actually represents Pennsylvania. I’m not an angry weird guy online. You know, to represent a state like Pennsylvania that keeps you honest, and I’m the only one this cycle that flipped a seat as well. »

Fetterman is drawing plenty of critical press. The Guardian reports that his vote for Mullin « prompted US House member Brendan Boyle, another Pennsylvania Democrat, to say that the vote showed why Fetterman was Donald Trump’s ‘favorite Democrat.’ »

« He needs to go, » Boyle said.

MULLIN SWORN IN AS DHS CHIEF AFTER GOP FRACTURE FORCED DEM TO SAVE NOMINATION

Rep. Pat Ryan, D-N.Y., said: « If you needed any more proof that Fetterman has completely abandoned his constituents, here it is. Pennsylvanians deserve a senator that actually fights for them. »

In the 2022 U.S. Senate race, Fetterman trounced former Rep. Conor Lamb, D-Pa., in the primary before defeating Dr. Mehmet Oz, R-Pa., in the general, despite a horrible debate in which Fetterman could barely function.

Lamb now says: « Did people think this vigilante was voting to protect their rights? Come on. »

Moe Davis of North Carolina, who ran unsuccessfully for the House, is now apologizing for sharing his donor list with the Fetterman camp. « I sincerely regret whatever part I had in helping to elect [Fetterman] in 2022. »

On the other side, Washington Examiner columnist Salena Zito, who has reported extensively from Pennsylvania, shared this statistic with radio host Hugh Hewitt: « The argument that Lamb is making, that Fetterman is not a true Democrat, Fetterman votes 93% of the time with Democrats, whereas Lamb voted 68% of the time with Democrats. That’s almost a 30-point difference. »

Zito added that « there is a lot of posturing, but the Democrats that I talk to, even they know that there’s sort of this online movement against Fetterman, it’s very difficult for me to find anyone outside of the far-left, and by the way, this all has to do with Israel, right? »

SUBSCRIBE TO HOWIE’S MEDIA BUZZMETER PODCAST, A RIFF ON THE DAY’S HOTTEST STORIES

If you put partisan warfare aside for a moment — very difficult, I know — Fetterman is showing the courage of his convictions. The man has guts.

Maybe Fetterrman, who still wears the trademark hoodie, has strayed too far from his Democratic constituents, but that’s a risk he chooses to take.

I wonder if battling back from a stroke is a factor here. In a brutally candid memoir, Fetterman admits he struggled with depression, even suicidal thoughts, and was exiled by his wife from the family’s home because his presence was too tough on the kids. In hindsight, he wrote, « I should have quit. »

« Paranoid. Not eating. Not sleeping. Not speaking. Not functioning. Resigned. Ashamed. Despairing. »

John Fetterman was harder on himself than anyone. I wonder if that fueled his desire to say what he really thinks, whatever the political cost. No matter what happens with his Senate career, he’s been through much worse.

  • NJ Gov. Sherrill attends mosque led by Imam once accused of Hamas ties in deportation case

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill attended a Ramadan event at a Paterson mosque led by an Imam who fought deportation for years over alleged ties to Hamas.

Sherrill posted photos of her visit to the Islamic Center of Passaic County on social media, wearing a hijab and taking selfies. In one image, she is seen speaking with the mosque’s longtime leader, Imam Mohammad Qatanani.

« Thank you to the Islamic Center of Passaic County for welcoming me to join their celebration as the holy month of Ramadan comes to a close, » she wrote. « I wish our Muslim neighbors a safe, joyous, and peaceful Eid al-Fitr. »

Qatanani, a Palestinian-born cleric, has been at the center of a decades-long immigration battle after federal authorities sought to deport him, citing alleged ties to Hamas and claims he failed to disclose a prior detention in Israel. He has denied those allegations, saying he was detained but never convicted.

MAMDANI TELLS TRUMP ADMIN ANTI-ISRAEL ACTIVIST SHOULD ‘REMAIN IN NEW YORK CITY’ AMID DEPORTATION CASE

As Fox News previously reported, the federal government moved to remove Qatanani from the U.S. beginning in the mid-2000s, arguing he made misrepresentations on his green card application and raising national security concerns tied to Israeli records.

An immigration judge ruled in Qatanani’s favor in 2008, finding the government’s evidence unreliable and giving little weight to Israeli court documents used to support the allegations, according to court records . The judge also found the government had not proven Qatanani engaged in terrorist activity.

Court records further raised concerns about the reliability of statements attributed to Qatanani, including whether they may have been obtained under coercive conditions. Subsequent rulings over the years continued to favor him.

A federal appeals court ultimately blocked his deportation in 2025, ruling immigration officials acted improperly in attempting to reverse his legal status.

The [Board of Immigration Appeals] exceeded its authority when it attempted to undo Qatanani’s adjustment to LPR status by using an agency regulation in a manner inconsistent with the procedures set out by Congress, » the court wrote.

The decision focused on legal process rather than resolving the underlying allegations, finding federal authorities failed to follow required procedures after missing deadlines to challenge a key ruling granting him permanent residency.

It is unclear whether Sherrill was aware of Qatanani’s legal history at the time of her visit. Fox News Digital has reached out to the governor’s office for comment.

  • If someone gets into your email, they own every account you have. These 3 moves lock them out for good

My friend Lisa called me last night, voice shaking. Someone had cleaned out her PayPal. Then her Amazon. Then they tried her bank. Three accounts in 40 minutes. The criminals never touched her passwords. They didn’t have to.

    They had her email.

10 SIMPLE CYBERSECURITY RESOLUTIONS FOR A SAFER 2026

Think about what lives in yours right now. Bank statements. Medical results. Your retirement account, your mortgage company, every streaming service, every store you’ve ever bought anything from. And here’s the part that should stop you cold: every password reset link on the planet gets delivered straight to your inbox.

A criminal doesn’t need to hack your bank. They just need your inbox. One account. Every other door swings wide open. That’s not a flaw in the system. That’s how email was designed to work. And most people protect it with the same password they’ve been using since the Bush administration.

    Nope. Not anymore.

The criminal goes to your bank’s website. Click « forgot password » and type in your email address. The bank sends a reset link to your inbox. The criminal, already inside your email, clicks it, creates a new password and walks right in. Then they do it to your Amazon. Your PayPal. Your brokerage. Your health insurance portal.

Each account takes about 60 seconds. It’s less effort than ordering a pizza.

The FBI calls this account takeover fraud, and it cost Americans $2.7 billion last year alone. The part that should really bother you: 81% of victims said they thought they were « pretty careful » about security beforehand. (Their words, not mine).

BE AWARE OF EXTORTION SCAM EMAILS CLAIMING YOUR DATA IS STOLEN

If your email password is under 16 characters or reused anywhere else, change it today. I use NordPass ($1.43 a month) to generate passwords that look like a cat walked across my keyboard. You remember one master password. It handles the rest. That’s the whole deal.

Two-factor means even if someone steals your password, they still can’t get in without a second code. Good. But here’s what most people don’t know: SMS text codes can be hijacked through something called a SIM swap attack. A criminal calls your cell carrier, sweet-talks a customer service rep and transfers your phone number to their device. Now your « secure » text codes go straight to them.

Use Google Authenticator instead. It generates codes on your physical phone, not through your carrier. Go to your email account’s security settings and swap SMS verification for an authenticator app. Takes five minutes.

NEW EMAIL SCAM USES HIDDEN CHARACTERS TO SLIP PAST FILTERS

Every time you clicked « Sign in with Google » to access some website or app, you handed that app a key to your email. Some of those apps can read your messages. Some can send emails posing as you. I did this audit last year and found 34 apps with access to my Gmail. Thirty-four. Apps I’d completely forgotten existed, still holding a master key to everything.

Go here right now: myaccount.google.com > Security > Third-party apps with account access. Revoke anything you don’t recognize or actively use. Gone.

Your bank has a fraud department. Your credit card has zero-liability protection. Your email? Nobody’s covering that one but you.

Twenty minutes. Three moves. Lisa wishes she’d done it on a boring Sunday afternoon instead of a panicked Tuesday night.

Your inbox is either a fortress or an open door. There’s no in between. And unlike your front door, this one doesn’t even need a deadbolt. Just strong security.

  • CNN, MS NOW avoid covering Loyola student Sheridan Gorman murdered by illegal immigrant in Chicago

Viewers of CNN and MS NOW are being kept in the dark about the illegal immigrant accused of murdering 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed on Sunday that the suspect, Jose Medina-Medina, is « a Venezuelan criminal illegal alien » who was apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol and released into the country under the Biden administration in 2023. Medina-Medina was released again one month later after being arrested for shoplifting.

CNN and MS NOW have ignored the story through Monday night, according to network transcripts via Grabien Media, as well as their website search results.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT CHARGED WITH KILLING LOYOLA STUDENT RELEASED UNDER BIDEN, DHS SAYS

Representatives for CNN and MS NOW did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment.

On Thursday morning, Gorman was shot in the back while walking along Chicago’s lakefront with a group of friends, who all attempted to flee after the suspect came towards them with a gun. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The story is reminiscent of the 2024 murder of Laken Riley at the hands of an illegal immigrant. At the time, the legacy press was frequently scolded by conservatives for downplaying or ignoring the killer’s immigration status.

The liberal networks appear to be following a similar script, this time failing to mention a senseless murder altogether.

President Donald Trump has called the murder of Gorman « devastating. » But anyone who relies on CNN or MS NOW for information would have no idea.

The Chicago Police Department formally charged Medina-Medina on Sunday with murder in the shooting of Gorman.

GOV PRITZKER IGNORED MY LETTER — AFTER HIS SANCTUARY POLICIES KILLED MY DAUGHTER

In a statement, the department said Medina-Medina was currently facing six felony charges: one count of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of aggravated assault involving the discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, the department said.

A police source also told Fox News Digital that the shooting Thursday was an apparent ambush, with the gunman reportedly wearing a mask or face covering. The suspect is believed to have been living in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.

Investigators have since recovered a gun believed to be connected to the killing, sources said, and are awaiting the results of a gunshot residue test.

The suspect is being treated for tuberculosis and is expected to appear at a detention hearing on Friday via teleconference.

DHS HONORS ILLINOIS WOMAN WHOSE CORPSE WAS ALLEGEDLY ABUSED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT FREED UNDER SANCTUARY LAWS

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, widely seen as a 2028 Democratic hopeful, issued a delayed response Monday afternoon after Gorman’s murder began dominating headlines in Chicago. But he took a moment to swipe at the Trump administration, which he accused of « politicizing » her death.

« Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and Loyola University community grieving the senseless murder of Sheridan Gorman. Violent crime has no place in our streets, and we expect the alleged perpetrator to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The Trump Administration needs to stop politicizing heinous tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like reinstating federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts, » Pritzker said.

  • Lawmakers’ airport perks in crosshairs as DHS shutdown snarls travelers, TSA

A new House bill would ensure members of Congress feel the pain of the ongoing partial government shutdown the same way as many Americans across the country.

Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, is introducing the End Special Treatment for Congress at Airports Act, which is a House counterpart to legislation that sailed through the Senate last week.

Hinson argued that members of Congress should be held to the same standards as their constituents at airports during the funding stalemate, despite lawmakers generally being eligible for expedited screening and security escorts to bypass lines.

« Thanks to Democrats’ political games, TSA agents are working without pay, and many American families are facing 4-plus-hour wait times at airports during spring break, » Hinson told Fox News Digital.

HOUSE GOP TARGETING VULNERABLE DEMS OVER DHS SHUTDOWN, TSA CHAOS

« Some Members of Congress are avoiding the chaos they’ve created by getting preferential treatment and skipping the lines at airports, » she added. « My bill with Senator John Cornyn will eliminate these perks and ensure they face the consequences of inaction. »

The Iowa Republican’s bill would ban the use of taxpayer dollars to give lawmakers special treatment and require them to go through the same security screenings as everyday Americans. The measure would keep restrictions for lawmakers in place even after DHS funding is restored.

SCHUMER KNOCKS TRUMP ON IRAN, PLAN TO SEND ICE TO AIRPORTS: ‘ASKING FOR TROUBLE’

The bill’s introduction comes as the 38-day shutdown — the second-largest in U.S. history — continues to wreak havoc on U.S. travelers across the country due to staffing shortages at airports.

This Friday will mark the second full pay period in which Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents will miss their paychecks, leading thousands to call off work to make ends meet.

More than 400 TSA agents have quit their jobs since the shutdown began on Feb. 14, the department said last week.

Major airport systems across the country from Houston to New York reported hourslong wait times in security lines on Monday. The spring break travel season has appeared to worsen airports’ staffing constraints.

TRUMP SAYS ICE WILL DEPLOY TO AIRPORTS MONDAY TO ASSIST TSA AMID FUNDING STANDOFF

Hinson’s legislation is likely to get widespread support in the House, though it is unclear when it would receive a floor vote.

« I’m grateful to Congresswoman Hinson for joining my effort to restore fair practices for all airport travelers by introducing companion legislation in the House, and I urge other Members to support our mission to stop this unfair perk, » Cornyn said in a statement.

The Senate approved the Texas Republican’s bill by unanimous consent last Thursday.

TSA has paused lawmaker escorts since the beginning of the funding lapse. However, members of Congress could still be receiving special assistance at airports from other entities.

Though DHS talks have picked up in recent days, the funding standoff could still fail to reach a resolution this week.

Democrats have largely refused to support a full-year DHS spending bill as the party demands reforms to immigration enforcement. Republicans, by contrast, have opposed Democrat-led efforts to fund specific DHS subagencies while leaving the department’s immigration and border security functions unfunded.

Hinson is running for an open Senate seat vacated by Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, who is retiring. She is backed by President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans’ campaign arm.

  • Donald Trump’s legacy: Will Republicans embrace his political vision, or has he left conservatism in the dust?

We call it « Trumpism » for short, the collection of positions, policies and preferences embraced by the president of the United States.

But does all this amount to a coherent philosophy that can be carried out by future Republicans once Donald Trump is no longer in office?

And where does that leave conservatism? Trump never pretended to be a classic conservative, which deeply divided the movement.

There are those who quietly abandoned their previous views and have backed virtually everything Trump does, from tariffs to deportations to the war in Iran.

CONSERVATIVE COLUMNIST SAYS DONALD TRUMP HAS LOST THE COUNTRY. IT’S COMPLICATED.

And there are those who renounced Trump from the start, who believe he betrayed conservatives – and who tend to have prime spots in cable commentary, so shows can boast they have Republican pundits (who happen to hate Trump).

Some on the right bring a fierceness that eclipses the attacks by liberal critics. Former Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Gerard Baker, a Fox News contributor, said yesterday after the Iranians denied having talks with the White House that the « unsettling reality » is Americans have to « suspect that the enemy’s version of events is more likely to be true than our own. We have become Baghdad Bob. »

Talking to reporters before leaving Palm Beach yesterday, Trump said: « My life is a deal. That’s all I do is deals. »

WHY TRUMP IS DENOUNCING THE MEDIA’S IRAN WAR COVERAGE AS TOO NEGATIVE – BOOSTED BY RHETORICAL FCC BACKING

The context was what he insisted were the negotiations with Iran, but the declaration certainly applies to his business pursuits and political career.

I’ve known Trump since 1987, and I can tell you that he basically does whatever works in the moment. If that is inconsistent with his position the previous day or week or month, so be it. Let the pontificators argue about that.

Trump is immune to corrosive criticism about flip-flops because he views every day as a clean slate, in which his allies may be those he once furiously criticized and his enemies may be former loyalists.

For instance, the president’s first-term position, backed by Congress, was that TikTok was a threat to national security because of its Chinese ownership, and should be banned unless it was sold to an American company.

When I asked him about this before the election, Trump, whose campaign greatly benefited from its use of TikTok, said he was no longer in favor of a ban. This, he said, was because removing TikTok would help Facebook, and he deemed Mark Zuckerberg’s empire more of a threat.

Not a terribly convincing explanation, but with the president, that was then, this is now.

AS AMERICA TURNS 250, TRUMP SHOULD RESTORE WASHINGTON, DC’S ORIGINAL BORDERS

For what it’s worth, a deal was finally reached this year to sell the hugely popular app to a joint venture in which American investors have majority control.

The hot media debate right now is what comes after Trump, and whether future Republicans – JD Vance, Marco Rubio, whoever – must follow his blueprint. This is especially resonant because the America First candidate who crusaded against foreign wars radically changed his approach by attacking Iran.

Atlantic contributor Pete Wehner, whose specialty is Christian ethics, says that in 2016 he was a lifelong Republican who had served under Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

He said in a New York Times op-ed that Trump « would threaten the future of the Republican Party, » that he « sought to cultivate and encourage the ugliest passions within the GOP, dousing the embers of hate with kerosene. »

Among Republicans, including evangelical and fundamentalist Christians, the president « rewired their moral circuitry… And in the process, he killed American conservatism. MAGA is not just antithetical to conservatism; it is at war with it. »

But look at Trump’s record. He sealed the southern border which was utterly porous under Joe Biden. He launched a mass deportation program aimed at illegal immigrants, a major target on the right. He cut taxes, and if most benefits went to the affluent, that’s what Republicans have always done. He slashed regulations at such places as the EPA. He reduced the size of the federal government by at least 300,000 jobs, or 10 percent, despite the mixed record of DOGE. And he was responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade.

Aren’t all these things, from easing tax burdens to restricting abortion to shrinking government, in line with conservative principles?

That’s not to say all these initiatives were handled well – look at the excesses of ICE and the killing of two Americans – or that they were wise decisions. But they’re not exactly at war with the conservative agenda of yore.

TOP TSA WATCHDOG BACKS TRUMP’S ICE AIRPORT MOVE AS SHUTDOWN SNARLS TRAVEL

And then there’s all the other stuff, some of it breaking with fiscal orthodoxy, including the vow to protect Social Security and Medicare.

Wehner concedes that many Republicans voted for Trump because they were struggling economically (and, I would add, felt marginalized by the mainstream culture).  He twists the knife by saying « at the core of the MAGA project and Trumpism is disruption and destruction, the delegitimization and razing of institutions, and the brutalization of opponents… The MAGA movement represents the betrayal of the temperamental tradition of conservatism » and « the disfigurement of the Republican Party. »

Jonah Goldberg, co-founder of the Dispatch, which has had success as a conservative, anti-Trump site, scoffs at such pointy-headed analysis.

« Trump has no ‘ideology,’ » Goldberg writes. « He does have a few ideas. Off the top of my head: take the oil, tariffs are economic Viagra, strength good, never apologize, women won’t resist celebrities when they grab them by their privates, ‘good genes’ matter a lot, allies are whiny b—-es, a bunch of romantic convictions about the supremacy of his instincts… »

He says these « gut impulses » and « sentiments » could be turned into an ideology. « But constructing an actual ideology requires thinking about how your various commitments might conflict, where the trade-offs are, what the edge cases might be, etc. »

To Jonah, it’s a matter of psychology. « But Trumpism is not just about Trump’s psychology, it’s the psychology of many of his supporters. If Trump is for it, it must be right. »

JOHN FETTERMAN SAYS TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME IS THE ‘LEADER’ OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

I’d just note that our politics is so polarized that many liberals engage in similar behavior, demonizing opponents, spouting the party line and never giving the other side a scintilla of credit.

Iran has been the world’s leading terror state since 1979, but while raising questions about congressional approval, nearly all Democrats won’t say anything positive about the attack on Iran.

Chuck Schumer, on « Morning Joe » yesterday, repeatedly refused to acknowledge to Joe Scarborough that the U.S. decimating Iran’s military was a good thing. He just kept deflecting.

One notable dissenter, John Fetterman, told CBS that what the president has accomplished in Iran is « remarkable. » And the senator said on a podcast that « our party is governed by TDS, » Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Of course, Democrats don’t seem as wedded to one ideology because of undeniable splits over Israel, over pronouns, over transgender issues, over the old defund-the-police rhetoric, running the gamut from more moderate lawmakers to the Squad. What’s more, they don’t have a leader ready to denounce them and endorse primary opponents, so there’s little penalty for going off the reservation.

Gavin Newsom, a man of the left, has problems with progressives in his party because he has fought labor initiatives, backed housing deregulation, vetoed a bill allowing colleges to favor descendants of slaves, and opposes trans women playing in men’s sports.

SUBSCRIBE TO HOWIE’S MEDIA BUZZMETER PODCAST, A RIFF ON THE DAY’S HOTTEST STORIES

There’s no single answer to the future legacy of Trumpism. That depends on the president’s popularity, and the economic picture, and how Iran is viewed, in 2028. Trump the dealmaker is a singular figure, impossible to imitate.

But one thing is certain: the Republican Party will never return to the green-eyeshade stinginess of Paul Ryan, the compassionate conservatism of Bush 43, the NATO embrace of Bush 41, or the bipartisan chumminess of Ronald Reagan with Tip O’Neill.

The next era may be unclear, but Donald Trump has transformed the GOP forever.

  • Department of Education under Trump just took its ‘largest’ step closer to shutting down

The Department of Education (ED) just took a big step closer to shutting down.

The Trump administration announced on Thursday an interagency agreement between the ED and the Treasury to move student lending operations to the Treasury, which will « assume operational responsibility for collecting on defaulted Federal student loan debt and provide operational support to ED’s efforts to return borrowers to repayment, » the ED said in a release.

« I think we’ve been very clear about this last week that this is a multiphase process, » Nicholas Kent, Undersecretary of Education, told Fox News Digital on Monday.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO PULL BACK RACE-BASED CRITERIA IN FEDERAL GRANTS

Throughout the 2024 campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump promised to eliminate the Department of Education and signed an executive order directing his administration to start disbanding it

« The Secretary has been on the record saying that these interagency agreements are proof of concept, that we want to show Congress, that we want to show families, we want to show moms and dads and families that the Department of Education does not need to be here for federal grant aid and federal student loans to continue flowing to borrowers, » Kent said.

Andrew Gillen of the Cato Institute told Fox News Digital that this particular shift in responsibilities is significant because previous interagency agreements have been « relatively small. »

« Whereas this student loan move–this is the biggest staffing and the biggest budgetary component of the Department of Education. So, if it’s sent over to Treasury, this really does indicate that this is moving a substantial portion of the Department of Education elsewhere, » Gillen said.

« I think that that’s absolutely right, » Kent said in agreement with Gillen’s analysis. « Characterizing it as the next and largest step toward winding down the Department of Education is absolutely the right way to think about it. »

This interagency agreement follows the Trump administration’s effort to shift power from a handful of its offices and programs to other federal agencies as it works to dissolve the federal department completely.

« Cutting through layers of red tape in Washington is one essential piece of our final mission, » Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a press release. « As we partner with these agencies to improve federal programs, we will continue to gather best practices in each state through our 50-state tour, empower local leaders in K-12 education, restore excellence to higher education, and work with Congress to codify these reforms. »

The department added that shifting student loan responsibilities to the Treasury will « mitigate the continuing fallout and cost to taxpayers from the Biden Administration’s mismanagement of the Federal student loan portfolio, and facilitate the return of defaulted borrowers to repayment. »

The total of student loans owed is at nearly $1.7 trillion, according to the department. It said less than 40% of borrowers arrange a repayment plan and almost 25% of them are in default.

« This will benefit students by streamlining the aid application and student loan repayment processes and save taxpayers money by reducing losses on student loans, » Gillen told Fox News Digital. « Once the move is complete, Education’s biggest budgetary and staffing requirements will be handled elsewhere, which will make it much more feasible to shut down the Department of Education. »

MCMAHON RECOUNTS STORY OF REASSURING PARENT OF SPECIAL NEEDS THAT FUNDING WILL CONTINUE AS DEPARTMENT SHRINKS

The ED has made « historic progress in such a short period of time, » according to Kent.

« In over a year, we have reduced the size of the department by over 40%. We have entered into 10 interagency agreements. We have done multiple staff details for other agencies where staff who are in the department are literally physically sitting at other agencies, » he said. « We are showing Congress and others that this proof of concept works and that we want to continue to work with Congress to memorialize these changes in legislation and with the ultimate goal of closing down the department and putting ourselves out of a job. »

  • Carville unloads on Maher, tells him to ‘get your head out of Bari Weiss’s a–’ in heated Trump rant

Democratic strategist James Carville criticized President Donald Trump and comedian Bill Maher during a recent episode of the « Politics War Room » podcast, where he responded to Trump’s remarks about former FBI Director Robert Mueller and pushed back on Maher’s comments about « Trump Derangement Syndrome. »

« Do me a favor, Bill. Try to get your head out of Bari Weiss’s a–, » Carville said, addressing Maher directly during the segment.

Carville’s remarks came after Maher criticized him as acting like a « crazy old man » with « Trump Derangement Syndrome, » arguing that Carville represents a small segment of political media disconnected from everyday Americans.

CARVILLE PREDICTS TRUMP WILL LEAVE OFFICE NEXT YEAR OUT OF FRUSTRATION AFTER MIDTERMS

Carville pushed back on that characterization, summarizing Maher’s critique before responding.

« The argument is basically myself and people like me are crazy… we’re just blind rage, crazy, we can’t stand Trump, » Carville said.

He followed up by embracing the labels, calling himself and those like-minded crazy.

« I’m going to agree with you. I’m crazy… a lot of people like me, we’re crazy, » Carville said.

JAMES CARVILLE TELLS STEPHEN A SMITH DEMOCRATS ‘DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TALK TO YOUNG MEN’

Carville described his reaction to the current political climate, claiming he and like-minded people wake up early, in a rage, over the state of the country.

« We wake up at 2 o’clock in the morning, throwing s— against the wall. I can’t believe this motherf—– is the President of the United States, » Carville said.

« Maybe our craziness is evidence of our sanity, » he added.

FETTERMAN CONDEMNED BY CARVILLE FOR SUPPORTING IRAN WAR, SAYS HE’S ALWAYS ON WRONG SIDE OF ISSUES

Carville also pointed to Trump’s response to Mueller’s death, noting Trump reacted by saying he was « glad, » and questioned whether that should change how critics view the situation.

« Robert Mueller dies and Trump says, ‘I’m glad,’ » Carville said. « Will you be stuck with being insane about this? »

Carville closed by reiterating his message to critics, saying they can « mock us » and « make fun of us, » but his position remains unchanged.

« We’re not going to change… we’re not going to back off, not one iota, » Carville noted.

« James Carville is a stone-cold loser who clearly suffers from a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain, » White House spokesperson, Davis Ingle, told Fox News Digital.

  • Mullin confirmed as DHS chief as lawmakers near solution on shutdown standoff

The Senate confirmed Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., as the ninth Homeland Security secretary, capping a sprint to replace embattled outgoing Secretary Kristi Noem.

It also caps off a 13-year career in Congress that began in the House and saw Mullin score a seat in the Senate in 2021 where he became the de facto bridge between both chambers, helping to build trust between the House and Senate during last year’s push to pass the « big, beautiful bill. » Ahead of the vote he arrived flanked by his family, and was excited to cast his final vote on himself.

Mullin, who was picked by President Donald Trump earlier this month to lead the Department of Homeland Security, was confirmed on a largely party-line vote. Sens. John Fetterman, D-Pa., and Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., joined nearly every Republican to clinch his nomination.

Heinrich said he bucked his party because he has seen that Mullin — who co-chairs the Senate Legislative Branch spending committee with him — « is not someone who can simply be bullied into changing his views. »

MULLIN’S CONFIRMATION SURVIVES KEY TEST VOTE AS DHS REMAINS SHUT DOWN

« And I look forward to having a secretary who doesn’t take their orders from Stephen Miller, » Heinrich said.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., was the only Republican to vote against Mullin, citing their chilly relationship and Mullin’s past comments that his 2017 assault was « justified. »

Mullin’s confirmation also saw the close of a whirlwind month in which Noem was reassigned after an explosive pair of hearings on Capitol Hill, as well as the deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

SCHUMER GAMBIT FAILS AS DHS SHUTDOWN HITS 36 DAYS AND AIRPORT LINES GROW

Still, Noem’s ousting and Mullin’s ascension have done little to shift Senate Democrats from their position. They continue to demand sweeping reforms to ICE and have so far blocked funding to the agency five times, along with several GOP attempts to temporarily extend funding to DHS.

The path to ending the shutdown appeared to become more complicated over the weekend.

Both sides began meeting for the first time during the shutdown, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., characterizing the talks as « productive. »

However, Trump threw a wrench into negotiations Sunday night, writing on Truth Social: « I don’t think we should make any deal with the Crazy, Country Destroying, Radical Left Democrats unless, and until, they vote with Republicans to pass ‘THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.’ »

GOP SENATOR’S GAMBIT EXPOSES FALSE DEM CLAIMS ABOUT SUPPORTING VOTER ID

« In other words, lump everything together as one, and VOTE!!! Kill the Filibuster, and stay in D.C. for Easter, if necessary, » Trump said.

That comes after Thune suggested to the president that Republicans could carve out ICE and Customs and Border Protection funding from a broader DHS package and instead fund those agencies through budget reconciliation.

Canceling recess may be a hard sell in the upper chamber, given that votes this past weekend were plagued by absences. When asked if he would cancel the upcoming two-week break, Thune said, « We’ll see. »

A cohort of Senate Republicans met with Trump ahead of Mullin’s confirmation vote. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., told reporters after that the meeting went « really well. »

When asked if Republicans had a solution to end the closure, she said, « We do. »

Still, Senate Democrats remain unified in their opposition to the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

« We’re ready to meet with the White House today to keep talking, » Schumer said. « In fact, we were going to meet this morning with Tom Homan. But apparently the White House pulled that meeting because of Donald Trump’s temper tantrum. They’re all scrambling around there in the White House. They don’t know what to do. »

  • Veteran CBS reporter joins far-left media company MeidasTouch as anchor, says they share same ‘north star’

Former CBS News reporter Scott MacFarlane announced on Monday that he is joining the far-left media company MeidasTouch.

MeidasTouch, which was initially formed as a political action committee designed to attack President Donald Trump in 2020, has since piled up over 6 million subscribers on YouTube. Earlier this month, MacFarlane bolted CBS News amid editor-in-chief Bari Weiss’ reshaping of the organization.

« I have a new platform for my independent, unfiltered reporting. Effective immediately, I am chief Washington correspondent for the MeidasTouch network, » MacFarlane said when announcing the move on social media.

CBS NEWS IN TRANSITION: WHO’S IN AND WHO’S OUT AFTER A TUMULTUOUS YEAR AT THE NETWORK

MacFarlane said he would anchor a daily program starting in the coming weeks.

« MeidasTouch and I share the same north star of communicating. When you have news to break, or something important to explain, just get to it, » MacFarlane said as he snapped his fingers at viewers.

« Straight to the point, as soon as you open the camera and open the microphone, simply, declaratively, conversationally, explain what’s happening. Explain what it means, » he added. « Put aside the production theater, and the useless bells and whistles. Just get to it. »

NPR referred to MeidasTouch as « unapologetically partisan » and an « amped-up MSNBC » in a report last year. MSNBC, the progressive cable news network, changed its name to MS NOW late last year.

CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT ANNOUNCES SUDDEN EXIT FROM NETWORK, SAYS HE’S SEEKING ‘SOME INDEPENDENCE’

MacFarlane then said he’s not an editorialist or a politician, but rather an « enterprise reporter. »

MacFarlane, who provided extensive Jan. 6 reporting for the network in recent years, said we’re living in a moment of « unique political toxicity and unique political danger. »

« The MeidasTouch and I have long shared this same philosophy; you don’t platform lies. You don’t platform conspiracy theories, and you don’t allow for the whitewashing of history, » MacFarlane said.

Many have speculated that MacFarlane simply wasn’t a good fit at CBS under Weiss, who is seeking to tone down the partisan coverage at the network. His move conjures up memories of former CBS News reporter Kate Smith, who left the network to take a news director position at Planned Parenthood in 2022.

Many conservatives took to social media to offer thoughts on MacFarlane’s move.

Journalist Mike Cote wrote, « This is why nobody on the political right buys the ‘legacy media is unbiased’ claptrap. When a longtime CBS reporter gets a new job with a Resistance slop clickbait farm in less than 2 weeks, the truth is pretty damn obvious. »

EX-CBS REPORTER WHO JOINED PLANNED PARENTHOOD DENIES PRIOR BIASED REPORTING

White House director of communications Steven Chueng said the move shows how « biased news media has become. »

« Every reporter who ‘leaves’ (more like fired from) their outlet always comes out as a deranged liberal. Every. Single. Damn. Time, » Chueng wrote.

Titles of recent videos posted to the MeidasTouch YouTube page include « Trump PANICS and LIES He MADE DEAL TO END WAR, » « Trump HIT BY KARMA in WAR as TABLES ARE TURNED, » « Trump’s HEALTH CRASHES in WAR as 25th AMENDMENT DEMANDED » and « Trump PANICS as Troops TURN AGAINST HIM in WAR. »
